Surely this can't be true but staggering if it is.

Reading sold last season's top goalscorer Dave Kitson to Stoke City for £5.5m last month and manager Steve Coppell would have had just Leroy Lita, Shane Long and David Mooney, a recent £200,000 signing from Cork City, as the club's only strikers.

Aston Villa, Everton and Sunderland were also all linked with moves for Doyle.

Considering they forgot N'Hunt it's probably shit.

Doyle's just been on SSN.

He didn't look too pissed off tbh but it did seem that he thought he was out the door.

The Guardian The Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is believed to be reviewing the position of his sporting director, Damien Comolli, after the club's disappointing dealings at the climax of this week's transfer window. Levy is thought to be angry about the way Comolli handled the search for replacements for Dimitar Berbatov, among others, and the Spurs chairman has left the country to consider the matter before making a decision.

The failure to sign Sergio García from Real Zaragoza - apparently a top priority for the manager Juande Ramos - and Reading's Kevin Doyle may prove to be the most costly of Comolli's perceived mistakes.

They should be thankful they didn't sign the wrong one :

staggeringly funny, but only if doyle doesnt get the hump with us over it

sounds like the club did what they were joking about and just turned off the phones!!LOL

alot of the fans and BBCRB were saying just we should keep the under contract stars no matter what money was offered,
and that looks like its what we did.

This is just utter bollox - surely they could have simply faxed a bid. I think the article gives it away as it says later on that it was more a case of Reading not agreeing to a deal as we had no replacement lined up.

Well yes and no, technically (if this is true of course) they never recieved a bid because they didn't answer! Had the answered and recieved the bid I doub they would have turned that one down.

As it happens, LOLZ all round.

The boy is even better than we thought, managed to score for Ireland without playing!

Reading duo of Kevin Doyle and Stephen Hunt have both been declared fit for Ireland's match against Montenegro on Wednesday night.
Royals boss Steve Coppell will be keeping a close eye on the pair and hoping that they do not aggravate the injury problems that had kept them out of the Republic's side which beat Georgia last weekend.

The pair missed that match because of calf injuries and there were doubts whether they would be fit enough for this weekend's Championship clash away at Ipswich but the prognosis is better now as long as they do not pick up further knocks.

Mirror today says Doyle to Villa as part of £10m deal including Marlon Harewood.

Harewood ?? Not cut it in the prem but would be ok in the championship.

Can't see what's in it for us tbh - what's the point in replacing Doyle with another Lita?

That sort of money they couldn't turn down, Harewood's been on a fair ol wage at West Ham and now Villa, he'd have to take a pay cut. He's flattered to decieve a bit for me.

We're going to lose Doyle soon, that's a fact. I quite like the idea of Harewood and around £7m.

Reading will struggle to attract a class striker. Harewood may prove the best of an average bunch.

It's if we sell Doyle and buy another unknown I'll be pissed!!!

Harewood > Lita

He would be a more than decent replacement is Doyle went.

Agreed, at this moment in time, Harewood is better than Lita but he's a real donkey who does flatter to deceive.

A charged up, dropped ego Lita, though, is a different matter.

Also agreed, that there are 100s of crap stikers knocking around and it says something when Tommy Smith at Watford or Nugent are probably the pick of the bunch that we could realistically approach.

WCBAP with Nugent... And Harewood come to that.

Wasn't Marlon Harewood part of the bling and Baby Bentley culture that Curbishley had to cull?

Because of course spending a few million is absolutely guaranteed to get us someone better than, say, Noel Hunt.

Stats comparison for Lita and Harewood in the last 3 seasons in the PL.

Lita
35 Starts
15 Subs
8 Goals
4 Assists
67 Shots
30 Shots on Target

Harewood
20 Starts
36 Subs
8 Goals
1 Assists
68 Shots
30 Shots on Target

It seems reasonable to assume that the split of starts / substitute appearances indicate they have spent similar amount of time on the pitch in the last 3 seasons - interesting that their stats are almost identical.

In the last 2 seasons Harewood has scored 5 from 1 start and 23 subs, whereas Lita has scored 1 from 13 starts and 4 subs.
