How stewarding should be, no unnecessary hassle.

I once complained to a copper about racist chanting by a Reading fan. Not only did the copper not do anything about said racist chanting, he actually told the guy in question that I'd complained. Really, really uncomfortable, especially as I was still only 16 or 17 at the time.

The stewards did move one guy at the back and had a word or two with his mate, who was allowed to remain where he was - don't know what that was all about.

I was also less than impressed with the idiots who pushed forward from the back when we scored our third goal, causing a couple of old men behind me to fall forward and I also had to grab hold of son of RL or he would have gone tumbling. That incident only caused to remind me why standing on the terraces could be so dangerous at Elm Park - I used to dread a goal coming sometimes as I knew I'd end up about 18 rows further than where I started!

Thames In my opinion, "pikey" and "gypo" are racist insults.

I dont think we can complain though because I heard one Reading fan calling thier striker (Nicky Maynard) a racial word beginning with N.

This same individual then announced to his friends that he was not going to be participating with the KHALIFA CISSE song, purely because of Cisse's ethnicity. He also added, he didn't want any of "that lot" playing for Reading.

what a total moron

So, presumably, if someone threw a bananaskin or made monkey noises at Bikey, and he just shrugged it off, it would mean it also shouldn't be dealt with? The point is that the term "gypo" is a term of racist abuse; "pikey" I'm ambivilent about, as it clearly doesn't have racist origins but has generally come to be associated with being a gypsie too. Anyway, the seriousness of using racist language is not generally measured by whether or not the target reacts.

Banana skins are a blatant racist symbol.

Pikey and Gypo songs refer to someone's long hair.

To say the two are not remotely similar is still grossly understating it.

And there was me thinking that gypo in some way referred to gypsies.

So, am I a gypo?

I haven't the faintest idea. But I do know that if you have long hair and played professional football, people would sing "where's your caravan" at you because it is the hair rather than the background that prompts the chant.

do you really not think that a) they are implying that the player in question looks like a gypsie and b) that this is something negative? It's not the same as mocking somebody for being bald, or even for having bad hair, is it? After all, you wouldn't think it was OK to call someone a nigger if they had very curly hair, would you?

I'm not saying anything of the sort.

I'm explaining to you why crowds sing that song as you don't seem to realise and i'm saying that to compare it to throwing banana skins at black players is ludicrous.

Are you suggesting imbedding an axe in the head of an opposing player is acceptable?

You keep to discussing things i've actually said and i'll keep to discussing things you've actually said.

As you've failed to do this again on the last post, the question stands - are you suggesting that imbedding an axe in an opposing player's head is acceptable?

If our fans think throwing banana skins at black players is no less acceptable than chanting "where's your caravan", i'm pretty embarassed by them.

Neither of them are acceptable as both are racist.

There really is not a discussion to be had here unless you are going continue arguing that it's not racist, you can keep digging that hole if you want though.

Jesus, Schards, I'm not frimmers! All I was saying - as I'm sure you really understood - is that if it is not right to use racist language and racial stereotypes to attack somebody's physical characteristics in one instance (ie calling somebody with curly hair a nigger) then I don't see how it can be right in another (ie calling somebody with long hair a gypo).

As far as I'm concerned, "gypo" is a racist term, and its use is racist, as is racial stereotyping of gypsies. It really doesn't matter whether the players in question actually are gypsies; people using these terms are using racist language and ideas. And it should be considered unacceptible.

Sod it, I knew it was wrong to come on The Team Board.

Indeed it is, and "where's your caravan" is abuse of players with long hair.

Well, you asked for evidence. Took you all of 3 minutes to provide it for me when you continued this line of thought.
