How many points will it take?

by PEARCEY » 09 Dec 2008 22:26

...to finish in the top two.
I read on here a couple of weeks ago that 78 points would be enough. No way Jose.
I reckon we could be looking at 90 to guarantee a top two place

88 would do it IMO.

Maybe as low as 86, but I doubt it.

I though 92 would be absolutely fine at the begining of the season (2 points a game)...not sure that will be enough now.

A lot. The form of the top three is frightening at the moment.

Didn't 85 win it last year? What does that say...

Still the 3 promoted are doing ok.

You do find that when you get to this stage of a season you can get a very good idea of how many points might be required for automatic promotion, play-offs or relegation. You can do that just by looking at the number of points the second placed team has, the sixth placed and the twenty second placed. Divide the number of points by the games played and mutiply by 46.
In the case of automatic promotion forgetting goal average for the moment to be second you only need one more point than Reading to be in second spot. Hence with my formula(?) Reading will end the season with 90 points and therefore for us to miss out two other teams need 91 points or more.
I have taken tis as a yardstick for a number of seasons and find it to be pretty accurate although it would be rare for three teams to get over 90 points from 46 games in a hard championship season and probably won't happen.
Last season in the premiership all the silly commentators were saying 40 points was needed to stay up but it was obvious half way through the season that 36 points would be enough and so it proved

It is very unusual for three teams to get a lot of points in the Championship. I went back 10 seasons and there has not been one when the top 3 all scored 90. I think 88 is the most that a team has needed for top 2.

Unfortunately this season could be the exception and all three may make 90 plus but in reality I expect one of the three to have a bad patch at some stage - just hope it is not us.

Christ what a mediocre league it was last year!

Completely different this year. Well at the top anyway.

Since the Leagues were re-organised (1992/93) the highest number of points by the team finishing 3rd was 90. The average over that 16 year period was 81.9.
When we got 106 the team in 3rd got 81

If teams in mid table get 79 points then teams at the bottom are going to get incredibly low totals as there are only so may points to go around...

Odd that last season teams got so few to go up and yet those same teams are doing pretty well in the Prem, clearly how you go up doesn;t necessarily show how you will do once you are up there.

indeed, the year we went up, Sheff Utd points total would have been enough to win the league most other seasons

Out of the top 3, I fear it'll be us that drops away into the play-offs bunch.
The transfer window won't affect Wolves or Brum, in fact they'll probably strengthen,
but I think we're gonna suffer disruption & destabling, losing Doyler & SHunt & maybe others.
I predict January seeing a poor points return for us. :(

I think what happened last year with all three of these teams is that they started pretty badly and then had a great run of form in second half of season - Watford had a massive lead at the top at one point and then completely faded away. I think there were others up there at the top at the start as well and Stoke and Hull came from mid-table mediocrity to snatch their promotion places.

One thing I did notice yesterday is how badly Watford and Charlton are doing - let's hope we're not in their shoes in 1 or 2 years time!

Doyles going nowhere

S.hunt might though but i think we can find a decent replacement for him.

As far as how many points will need, at least 86 the us Brum And Wolves are all on Brillaint form atm and if we can stay in touch we have a chance of at least second.
