cmonurz Correct odds, but not a great bet imho.

Something I can completely agree with you on.

Doesn't matter what the odds are, if you're just going to be giving money to the bookie. We aren't good enough this season, with the form of some of the other teams to win the league.

3.3 on Betfair. Brum 6.8, Cardiff 27, Burnley 70. Wolves trading at 2.18. Book trading at 101.3%. Book about right now but transfer window is the key to working out what might be value

I don't really get 'books''.

By 'good odds' I think the OP felt that the price represented good value, i.e. 9/4 or roughly 2/1, suggests that there is a 1 in 3 chance (or thereabouts) of us finishing top . Wolves are close to evens, so the bookie thinks there is roughly a 1 in 2 chance that they will finish top.

I said that the odds were 'correct', because imho I think slightly worse than 1 in 3 is about an accurate summation of our chances of coming top. A 'good bet' to me would be one where I felt the bookie had under-estimated our chances, i.e. we are priced 9/4, but I thought we should be closer to 6/4, or something like that.

That's probably a better summary than I just wrote, tbh.

All gambling is a matter of opinion. Someone offers a price based on opinion and someone with a different opinion will accept the price. Simple really :)

thank you all for the explanations

I just asked because i don't think that at this time in a season that anyone not even Wolves
are a good 9/4 chance, oh alright maybe wolves but only because they are 3 wins ahead of
their nearest chasing teams. in fact I have just talked myself into laying Wolves at the
11/10 asked for on Betfair. bacause if we beat them at the Mad Stad we should be close
unless the Manager of the Month award does its usual trick.

edit--sorry i was being an optomist

Good luck with the bet MOJO. There in lies the fun of gambling. If anything I would say Wolves at 2.18 is the value but that's just my opinion. I think Brum are very average and the gap with the likes of Cardiff etc is too big. As for us, I think we are over achieving results wise in recent weeks and need to make a couple of key signings in the window. Unbeaten in 8 but only Brum away was a really convincing performance so we need to improve a touch to get promoted let alone catch Wolves.
Only time will tell :-)

Betfair

Wolves 2.06 from 2.18 last week
Reading 3.35 f 3.3
Brum 7 f 6.8
Cardiff 32 f 27
Burnley 75 f 70

Book at 102.3% from 101.3% last week

The Wolves move from 2.18 to 2.06 moves the book despite the rest drifting. Cardiff the big drifters having lost Chopra and Routledge. I still see Wolves as the slight value (I'd have them at around 1.9) especially as we have what may be a harder month than them. Aside from us they have Preston & Watford H plus Bristol A whilst we have Watford H and Swansea / QPR A. Much depends on Wolves result against us but they could easily be trading at 1.7 come the end of January.

Now I know I don't understand odds!

With Birmingham and Cardiff not playing and Wolves losing how do the Birmingham odds get shorter and Cardiff's longer?

Wolves losing contributes to Birmingham's odds shortening. Perhaps Cardiff lengthening simply for our continued good form, maybe that of Sheffield United too.
