Games you can remember because they were so boring

by rhroyal » 06 Jan 2009 18:24

Normally dull 0-0s or 1-0s slip out of the mind, but some are so unbelievable mind numbing that they stay in your memory. For me it'll always be Reading 0 - 0 Plymouth in 2005 with the beard day band providing the only entertainment. Either that or the 0-0 against Watford at the Mad Stad in 2006.

Fortunately for me that was practically the whole of the 89/90, 90/91 and 91/92 seasons!! I blame my mind being warped by the combined effect of alchohol and soft drugs, the interference home kit and prison arrow away kits, and poor football fare at the time, for some reason I remember very few games from these seasons even though I went to most of them...

I vaguely remember some letter in the programme from this time sent from some young Nigerian lad who said that Reading was his favourite team as he "admired our carpet football" !

Reading 0 - 0 Barnsley
November 95
Freezing cold, the coldest I have ever been at a football match.

Arsenal 2 - 0 Reading
April 08
Pointless going to watch the inevitable walkover. Bored out of my skin.

Watford 0 - 0 Reading
December 06
2 highlights on MOTD on the last game speaks volumes.

Fulham 0 - 0 Reading
March 93
My first away game. I'm surprised I went to another.

Almost all of the matches under TB1.

Almost all of the matches under TB2.

How about games you remember because you were so cold. Hull City 0-0 at Elm Park, can't remember the year. But it was so cold that all I remember of the day was leaving early and stopping at Rivermead on the way home for a nice hot chocolate.

There was a 0 - 0 before the East Stand became reserved seating. Forget who it was against.

But it was only memorable for the fact I was sat behind Blackie who produced a song made exclusively out of the company names on the West Stand advertising hoardings. One verse went "Car Contacts, La la la, Car Contacts, La la la" or something.

I thought the Norwich game was quite boring if im totally honest and it was only exciting for 5 minutes-at the end.
I'd say the Blackpool game was just frustrating, likewise QPR.
Other than those, every game i've been to has been rather enjoyable...esspecially the match agaisnt Shef Weds!

I don't know about Boring, But I can remember Port Vale at Elm Park the season we went down.

They dicked us 3-0 and I can remember getting unbelievable angry at just how frustratingly shit we were, and how they weren't very good but still destroyed us.

Similar thing happened with Wimbledon at the Mad Stad on boxing day. Those are the only two performances which have actually made me furious.

Not forgetting the Stoke, Palace and Wimbledon hat-trick of 0-3 defeats in December of said year.

21 October 2003: LEAGUE DIVISION ONE
READING 0 WALSALL 1
Samways (4 mins).

this has always lived in my memory as one of the worst games of football I have ever watched

there was champions league football on the tele that night, this game was an advert for staying home and watching man utd or arsenal!

Home to Chesterfield 1988-89. 0-0 and not a single shot on target by either team in the whole game. The highlight was Gary Phillips fluffing a backpass and putting it out for a corner. As I left, I remember thinking that if I lived to 100, I would never see a game quite so shit or devoid of incident. Think West Germany v Austria in Spain 82 without the goal. Admittedly most of the games in the arse end of the Porterfield era ran it close, a 1-0 defeat at home to Bolton being memorably unmemorable.

The teium of those 0-0's league and cup must be up there. I almost cheered when we lost the penalty shoot out.
