I rather hope Harper and Shunt leave now

by Royal Rother » 30 Jan 2009 11:55

Bored of all the speculation now. Our squad is a lot stronger than people give it credit for and the absence of supposedly key players has generally made bugger all difference; our fringe players have always stepped up and done a great job and now could be the time for them to really show their mettle.

Harper and Shunt might be the most energetic within the usual starting 11 but they are not the be all and end all. We have players waiting in the wings who are ready and able - the supposed adversity in their departure will create a great atmosphere on match days as the fans really get behind the team.

Bring it on!

I rather look forward to reading all the doom and gloom on here and then watch the team carry on as if nothing has happened.

And yes, bored of is perfectly acceptable these days so feck off ancient grammar pedants.

I think we'd be fine without them but I hope they both stay.

'greed. It'll be good to see Jem build on his good work earlier in the season.

Saying "fcuk" on the bus in front of old ladies, drinking beer out of bottles instead of a glass, and covering your body with unsightly tattoos and piercings seem to be acceptable these days. too. Doesn't make them any less ugly.

Jem's reappearance would be the only positive thing about Harps leaving. But it would be a shame to break up the Harps Cisse double act.

I think harps has been dead wood for quite a while now , he is useless against any team that close down quickly and battle for the ball...
if there was an actim index for most pointing during a game he would certainly be top of the list, pointing doesn't win games though

Well I hope that they both don't leave. If they do then I'm not going to have to cry myself to sleep, but given the choice I'd like them both to stay. It's not looking that way though is it

Rother we agree again!!

Harper can be replaced by either a better footballer in Matejovsky orthe younger version of him in Karacan and reading will carry on as normal. I don't see losing Harper as any sort of loss to be honest. He'll go with everyone's blessing after 8 years of service but there is nothing about his game that can't be replaced or improved on when he goes. What we lose in Harper we will gain in either Marek or Karacan.

As for Hunt I would like a replacement of good quality, a Campbell Ryce or a Surman. Different types of players but both naturally wide players that would give us something different. Again we'd miss Hunt's set pieces, we'd miss his enrgy and commitment. But we'd add more quality from open play in Surman or we'd add more pace and trickery in Campbell Ryce.

We'd make tidy profits on both having had their best years, they'd get their moves and RFC can move on. I would have no problem with either or in lots of ways preferably both leaving. The only person Reading can't replace is Doyle, they keep him and they'll be fine.

I'd like to see some certainty one way or the other before Saturday as it can only be unsettling as both players are likely to play.

Yes it would be good if Coppell came out and clarified his position regarding Harps. With Hunt it's not in his hands but with Harps it is.

I think we'll struggle to make top 2 without both unless some other players step up better than can be reasonably expected.

IMO SHunt and Harper are two of our best three players consistently playing in our side.

Schards: I'd like to think there was a greater degree of certainty over what's going on within the squad. And that is where it is important. Much less so with the fans.

I don't see any one of our replacement midfielders performing all the roles Harper does, certainly not to the same quality. Although a couple would do things he is less able at a bit better.

I don't always agree with you AP but think your comments are spot on. I think if anything the speculation over these two players has damaged us and the remainder of the squad is quite capable of promotion without them but I would like to see one of the two wide players added to help us out.

I so wish I could believe this, but this is (Can you hear) Reading we're talking about.

While I agree that Harper is not irreplacable, a straight swap with Matejovski clearly will not work as he works better in a 4-5-1 formation, not our preferred 4-4-2. Until we change the system Matejovski's going to be no more than a bit part player and - to be honest - I can't see Coppell changing the system before the end of the season.

In an ideal world i want them both to stay to keep the continuety going, but then again i don't think Harper has been on his game this season and Marek or Karacan can take his spot comfortably. As for Hunt, he's a gobby little twat but the facts are he has the most assists, annoys opponents, and is an integral part of how we tick, more so than Harper.

If anyone's gonna go, let it be Harper.
