Evening RR ! You are correct, I kept the maths simple for the purpose of posting but the 5% take out would have a varied impact on the final effective book % depending on a) the overall % of the book in the first place and b) the price of your winner.
To add to the fun Betfair commission varies dependng in your turnover with them i.e the higher the turnover the lower the commission. Not that my turnover is very high. More a bit of fun for me
Are you a racing man per your pic ?

From the age of about 12 I was a fanatical racing boy/man. I knew the 1970s NH formlines like no-one else! Never a gambler, but enjoyed a small bet (or several) every day.

Business / kids / responsibilities gradually put a stop to that so that these days I only rarely watch the racing and never have a bet.

But I have great memories of some real heroes - Bula, Pendil, Lanzarote, Crisp, Killiney, Sea Pigeon, Night Nurse to name a few. Although there's not a great deal of 1970s footage around, YouTube's old racing clips have given great pleasure in the last year or so.

Similar story for me although I still have the odd bet and my game is the flat first and foremost. I have family that have worked for Henry Candy for the past 30 years so I follow their yard with great interest and have a bet when they really fancy one. I also love the jumps however and my early racing days would have been when Desert Orchid was still a novice hurdler.
I live close to Ascot racecourse and Dessie was a regular at that venue back then. I'll never forget the day he gave Panto Prince best part of 2 stone and did him on the line. Happy days :)
As for the avatar, the mighty Sea Pigeon would be my guess ?

Correct with Sea Pigeon. I had / have a real soft spot for him. He finished just out of the places in Morston's '73 Derby, when trained by Jeremy Tree but was a bit of a handful as an entire so they had him gelded and put him away for a year or so.

In those days it was pretty rare for very decent Flat horses to go over the jumps and when I heard he was with Gordon Richards and going hurdling I was amazed / excited so watched his first couple of races with great interest. He kind of caught my imagination so I became a big fan; as I've always loved to see horses held up at the back come steaming through at the end of the race, he was right up my street.

As for Desert Orchid, I saw him as a novice hurdler at Newbury when he came off the back of a few decent wins against pretty average opposition into his first good quality race - he just looked like a tearaway and IIRC, (I suppose I ought to check out his bio first!) had already been caught when he tipped up with about 3 hurdles left. At that point I would never have expected him to become a champion.

I remember Candy's Nicholas Bill doing me a nice favour 2 or 3 decades back!

See, aint I the genius 8)

The odds wont go much shorter for Reading for a while unless something insane happens, so definately a good time to lay it off now.

Promotion is even more of a certainty ....1/4 in places !!

I do remember us being 1/6 at one stage to stay up last year so be warned...

Shirley could just be a sign that following our result against Wolves a lot of money has been placed on us, so odds have shortened because of that, rather than Bookies now think we'll win.

Amazing,

We don't play a match today and Sky Bet now makes Royals 5/4 fav's to win CC Championship outright.

Perhaps we should just postpone the rest of the season.

Well it figures as if we win our two games in hand we will be top with probably the easiest run in out of the top teams. A lot of away games which is a slight worry though.
