Reading FC villains

by Gus the teenage cow » 03 Feb 2009 17:13

I'm currently writing a chapte rin my book about Reading villains down through the yearss, my knowledge only goes back to the 1980's so I'd appreciate your suggestions here

-qualifications for inclusion are that you have manged or played for the club and done something that has affected the club negatively while your were at the club

obvious candidates are the likes of alan pardew, mark mcghee etc. but i am looking for less obvious suggestions than a manager who left to go to a bigger club

stuart lovell is one we are considering for missing the penalty in the play-off final, that could be a harsh one but having contacted him he seems fine with it and is willing to be interviewed about the incident

any other suggestions please?

Yeah, that is harsh. And make sure to ask Lovell whether he'd score it if given another chance, looking back. It's easy to say, but with hindsight, it's a good job he missed the damn thing.

Sonko? Not quite as harsh I suppose.

Who was it who got sent off a while back, late nineties, despite having been nowhere near said incident? Terrible left back? Hs team mates should probably be included.

Robert Maxwell. Not Reading, but a villain in the history of Reading.

Jack Mansell was a hero turned villain. He set us alight, and then burned us down.

Bullivant was a villain also. Took over a competent team and systematically turned it into an incompetent one.

Fae. Sonko partly redeemed himself; not Fae.

Oh, and Barry Butlin.

God I hated Bodin.

My personal shit list includes:

McGhee
Bodin
Keith Jones
Brayson
Shepperd
Houghton
Mike Lewis
Half the Burns era players actually.

I refuse to get started on people who haven't been at our club. No wait. That Cnut Pescisolido. He makes it on no matter what. But I'll be here for ever if I try to think of the rest.

Jack Mansell & Stuart Lovell mentioned as RFC Villians?

Pathetic.

They dont really fit your definition though, do they.

The most recent villain was probably Nicky Shorey during his last half season. (We went down on goal difference, btw)

As for other players and managers
Mass Sarr has pretty much moulded Madejski's modern day view of the 'foreign mercernary'.
Tommy Burns ended Jamie Lambert's career before it could get started
and Jimmy Quinn split up a decent team by creating rifts between the players in training to such a point that the players petitioned for him to leave. Plus he once pushed in front of me in the queue for the bar.

Mansell took us down very ignominiously and unnecessarily indeed. And we weren't used to it. Yes he got us playing some brilliant stuff the season before, but he also threw out some good players with the bathwater. I never felt he cared about us. A sort of lower-division Malcolm Allison.

Potentially more interesting is the non-RFC villains such as Ron Futcher.

Futcher-Swindlehurst-Carpenter-Martinez are the ones that stick in my mind.

I disliked Meaker 10 times more than Andy Hughes or Stephen Hunt.
To bring him in as a significant element of the part-exchange deal for possibly our best ever midfielder super Si was IMHO criminal.
Bringing in metal-head aged Morley to break up the very successful Lovell/Nogan partnership was another dreadful act which put us firmly on the slippery slope of long-ball football.
So for those two transactions I nominate Quinn & Gooding as managerial villains but as players I would never fault them.
BTW poor old Jim was recently sacked by Bournemouth because of a very unhappy dressing-room (and long-ball football with one up front) whick kinda backs up Dr H's view in his earlier post.

Can't believe that we got this far into the thread without mentioning the biggest villain in RFC history.

Nobbers - I give you the accused. Frank Waller. It was criminal what he nearly got away with.
