Why do we never take advantage!?

by TBM » 23 Feb 2009 11:04

About 4 times this season we've had the chance to close the gap or move up a position or two and we've failed on every occasion.

What exactly is our problem with failing to take advantage when the likes of Brum, Wolves etc lose/draw!?

Something called "pressure", maybe?

I'm sure their fans are saying exactly the same thing. It's just very frustrating, especially when you know the team is a lot better than they are currently playing.

It’s certainly the same at Brum/Wolves – all three of us seem hell bent on making it tough on ourselves to go up, maybe the pressure of not wanting to finish 3rd has had the effect that we’re tripping over ourselves, opening the door for say a Cardiff to nick in.

Let's be fair though, we were what 12 points behind not that long ago. So we must have taken advantage a few times !

But I agree it's incredibly frustrating. Luckily it must be equally frustrating at every club in the top 3

Birmingham and Wolves fans could ask the same question of their teams.

Wolves were the biggest losers this weekend. Yes they were the only ones to get a point, but played knowing the both us and Birmingham had lost and it was a great opportunity to remove the games in hand out of the equation. But they didn't.

On the recent form table (last 8 games) Reading are 12th, Brum 13th and Wolves 23rd.

This is like the glass half empty/full conversation I have with my son. I always say "what a waste of an opportunity", he always says "well, lucky for us Wolves/Brum didn't take advantage".

Because they knew what we and Birmingham had done. They had a huge opportunity to stretch their lead and failed to do so.

They were the ones who didn't take advantage, as we didn't know there was an advantage to take..

Puts more pressure on them surely?

Yes it does, but they were the ones who failed to take advantage as they KNEW our results. We had no advantage to take as Birmingham were playing at the same time as us and Wolves were playing the following day.

Pressure is irrelevant.

Surely we failed to take advantage of the fact that Wolves weren't playing to close the gap on them, and they subsequently failed to take full advantage of our defeat by only increasing their lead by 1 point.

We can now take advantage of our games in hand to over haul them.

mind you if things don't change we'll still finish second with Blues and Wolves heading backwards faster than us !

Actually wouldn;t we be third with Bristol and Cardiff just pipping us ?

Enjoy it. It's a roller-coaster of a season!
Just think of the joy we'll have if we get promoted!
Then think of the depression we'll feel when we lose more than we win...
 Joking.

We've still got a very good chance to finish 1st or second. Wolves and B'ham seem no more likely to turn their form around than us. Their poor form has been going longer as well.

I find it a bit of a struggle to see two of Cardiff, Bristol, Sheff, Swansea, Preston etc finishing above us. I think we'll finish above at least one of Wolves and B'ham, probably both eventually.

I simply can't accept that Cardiff will win the title, so that leaves us 1st or second behind Wolves or B'ham.

I could of course be blinded by hope.

Isn't the answer to the original question that we have SC in charge?? He is from the same school as Curbishly and Pardew, and neither of them were much better from the position of catching up, I recall many times we could have gone top/second third/play off position/etc under pardew yet we so often failed to do so. Same in play offs, managers like SC are not set up for one off games, they need the season long thing, and if it works it is great 05/06, but when the system goes wrong it is harder to change.

Good call.

Pards is a very different manager to Coppell. I'd say different strengths, but a fair few of the same major weaknesses.
