TARGET

by brendywendy » 08 Mar 2009 20:01

by the sound of duberry and wally downes' post game comments it looks like theyve set themselves the challenge of going unbeaten to the end of the season.

what are the odds?

needless to say, if that happens we'll go up.

Good to set high, improbably targets.
Improbable, if we keep up this form.

Nope...another 11 points may not be enough for the top 6 and would definitely fall short of the top 2.

Certainly not fact at the moment. It will be borderline and will not be enough for the top 2 IMO

We have 11 games to go

If we average 2 points per game (22 more) we'll be on 85 and that might not be enough

If Birmingham average 2 points a game, they'd be on 85, Wolves would be on 88

I know we edge it on GD, but to rely on that would be madness

Going undefeated doesn't remotely cut it. 0-0 at Derby and Doncaster, for example,
as our games in hand, would see us 2 points behind Birmingham, 5 behind Wolves
with "9 to play"

We have to start winning games. We need to win one of the games in hand and probably
six of the remaining 10 games so we go into the last game already on 84.

That means Birmingham would need 17 from 8 5 wins, 2 draws to also be on 84

But six wins and two defeats, they'd be on 85 and would only need to draw with us.

We HAVE TO beat Charlton and Ipswich, get something from Doncaster and Derby (probably 4 points)

This would be a very decent set of results normally

H WIN 3 Charlton
H WIN 3 Ipswich Town
A Draw 1 Doncaster
A Draw 1 Crystal Palace
A Draw 1 Coventry City
H Draw 1 Sheffield Utd <<<<<<<
A WIN 3 Blackpool
H WIN 3 Barnsley
A Draw 1 Derby County
A WIN 3 Norwich City
H Draw 1 Birmingham <<<<<<<

21 points giving us 84

Birmingham on 2 a game would be on 85. Obviously beating them at the Mad, would help enormously forcing them to get their 18 from 8 (6 wins, still possible) but then with the results above and a win v Brum we'd be on 86

To be safe, I think we either must win ALL our five home games (15), win at Blackpool (18) and at Norwich (21) and find three points from

A Doncaster
A Crystal Palace
A Coventry City
A Derby County

87 which would then require Birmingham to get 20 points from 8 = 6 wins and two draws, STILL possible

Doncaster are playing really well, Derby aren't too bad, both could be tough nights.

It won't be easy winning at either Coventry of Palace

I really think the home game against Brum will be the 2nd place decider.

Well the last one of those was exciting - Brentford (away).

Sir Steve was the home manager on that occasion, and couldn't find the tactical nous to beat the visitors that day. Let's hope the home team doesn't need a win come 3rd May!

Only kidding - just be nice to go into the game with everything in our own hands, unlike the last game of last season!

Need to remember that Brum won't find it easy to average 2 points a game when they still have to play us, Wolves and Preston.

If the top four all do that and on the basis that their form is picking up. it's not impossible, we may still not go up
If, for example, all four win their home games and draw away, we'd end up with

1. Wolves 88
2. Reading 84
3. Cardiff 83
4. Birmingham 83

This shows we go up but its too close to call and staying unbeaten won't necessarily be enough

Yes we drew our way to promotion that season. It was one of the few seasons I can recall where it went our way and we sneaked a promotion/narrowly avoided a relegation(the othe being under Branfoot around 20 years ago when we won 4-2 at Chesterfield on the final day to avoid relegation).
Usually we are not so lucky as you will know more than most with your knowledge of Reading FC stats.
Would be nice to see us go up against Brum on the final day of the season though...but god that would be a long and tense afternoon.

And they have yet to play each other for a second time.

Who knows how it will all pan out - but I think it could all come down to the last game against Birmingham - with us needing a draw or a win to go up. I cannot imagine what the atmosphere will be if that happens - but it will be tense and exciting and one set of fans will go home very disappointed.
