Mick Gooding to tone down his accent?

by soggy biscuit » 08 Feb 2009 12:08

Can anyone at BBCRB confirm something that a few of us have heard which is that Mick Gooding has been asked to tone down his accent to sound more local?

May sound ridiculous but a few of us here know some at BBCRB quite well and all the talk over the past few days has been of this request. Apparently they have received a few complaints from people not happy to hear a Geordie as an RFC commentator and so have asked him to try and sound more local. He is reported to be (understandably) unhappy with this but when faced with a choice of changing his accent or potentially losing his job he has agreed to it.

Surely this is a wind up?!!

You would struggle to get anyone more pro Reading FC than Mick Gooding even with his Geordie accent!

Presumably the same people will also be petitioning for the removal from office of Kevin Dillon!

I just wish he'd save his breath and say "now " instead of "at this moment in time" or, as we had yesterday, "at this current moment in time."

a real "good fun" thread lol

Anyway;

How can they ask MG to tone down his accent for the masses? Then employ every scottish weather presenter going, on both national TV and radio?

It would seem that it is a "pre-requisit" to have a Scottish accent to get a job presenting anything on the beeb, especially on News24

And besides MG is a geordie.....how do they expect him to speak?

Dear BBC, if this is true its completely ridiculous. Please ask Mick to remain as himself!

What next asking Kevin Doyle and Stephen Hunt to stop sounding Irish?

Behave! I like Tim Dellor, top bloke. And if there is someone more pro than Mick Gooding it is Tim D.

Mind you, M G's voice does tend to grate on the ears somewhat...

I usually enjoy his commentary, but his references to "Robson-Canoe" today made me chuckle.

I'm sure his assertion that we had played well against Derby didn't go down too well with any Forest fans listening.

After enough years of good old Mick can't we PLEASE have someone different. He's getting almost as boring as the dickheads texting from the car park.

I do like Mick Gooding but having a fresh view occasionally would be good - as long as it's not someone too close to the players.

Does anyone think that Mick's accent will be toned down this weekend? I think my radio will need subtitles!

Mick Gooding - the acceptable face of the Geordie nation.

I do like him.
