Promotion/Relegation Watch

by Deathy » 18 Mar 2009 08:41

I'm licking my lips. I didn't realise how close Swindon are to relegation to League 1, and Brighton look temptingly close.

Luton, you have to feel sorry for them (don't you?), they must onlt be a couple of games away now from their relegation to the Conference.

8 wins fron our remaining 8 games will see Reading promoted. :?

It wasn't until last night that I realised just how close to the end of th season we are. It's squeeky bum time.

I believe Dover could be up by next Saturday if results go their way.

Likewise Jay, I knew we were getting there, but 7 or 8 games left for everyone, doom and despair are close for some.

Charlton are 14 points from safety with 8 to play, so their fate could be sealed in the next couple of weeks, if results go against them.

Leicester need 1 win to guarantee a playoff place.

Luton 12 points from safety with 9 to play.

Charlton is a sad state of affairs, as is Luton. It's not the fans fault (in Luton's case).

The Swine and Brighton dropping to League 2 is LOLable though.

But yeah, great and horrible time of the season this bit.

Now it's about bottle!

Luton fans are hardly helping the situation though are they. Their match against Aldershot last weekend was moved forward to 1:00pm on police advice, Category C game.

I'd like to see Swindon stay up, two Readingers (well, one ex-Readinger) doing the business there at the moment.

It's understandable though. SROT's membership would almost certainly double under those circumstances.

So, is it the fan's fault in Charlton's case then? Unless you're going to argue that they were gimp in wanting rid of Curbishley after years of what can only be called success (think on, team board idiots) I can't really se how they're culpable

That's not what I meant, no. But as you say, they got above themselves and felt Curbs wasn't doing enough anymore. Consistent top ten finishes, who'd want 'em.
Of course they can't be held responsible. Some shocking choices of manager aided their demise, but the fans did have a huge hand in getting the ball rolling.

They're a great example of a football club in such a healthy condition can suddenly see it all go so so wrong, and quickly too.

We were relegated from the Premiership, might not go back up this season, players will inevitably leave this summer as costs are cut etc, manager likely to move on to pastures new also and suddenly we could well be in the same boat.

In the Conference, Lewes are virtually down already - 20 points from safety with 9 games to play.

Bournemouth are now starting to creep up the league and are seven points and counting above the drop zone, thanks largely to an impressive 4-1 victory over promotion chasers Bradford, and a win for Luton against second bottom Grimsby last night.

Considering Bournemouth and Rotherham are both outside the bottom 2 now I guess it's a big LOL at anyone outside those three that thought their work was done thanks to th point penalties

I still wouldn't put it beyond Luton as they are now just 12 points off safety and Grimsby & Chester are frankly both awful - so can't see them picking up many more points.

If Luton can get say 20 pts from the last 27 they may well just do it.

Chester and Grimsby have tough games this week, if Luton beat Macclesfield this weekend, then momentum will be firmly in their corner.

Anyone care to put a full definitive list of clubs that could still gain:

1) automatic promotion
2) playoff places
3) relegation

???

Caveats: This is kinda tough, what with a lot of games in hand scattered all over the place --but it's accurate and current (and ignores obvious goal-difference tiebreakers that would come into play in the unrealistic event that someone near the bottom ends up near the top). It also rules out, not in --and the outs make for a shorter list (that's getting longer) these days.
