Seems the new stadium coupled with relegation crippled them, plain and simple really, still owe £24million on it and have a £4m overdraft, as many have said, it shows how lucky we are to have SJM in charge, and doing things in a sensible manner.

Does seem very odd they didn't sell what assets they have (Surman etc) in the transfer window .

Stranded As I understand it,

After the March deadline, if a team goes in to administration the points are not deducted automatically but at the end of the season.

If the club has been relegated then the 10 pt deduction carries over so they start on -10 the next year.

However, if they have not gone down, the 10pts is deducted from their final total. If the loss of these points drops them in to the relegation zone, they will go down but start the next year on 0 points.

Ah right - so basically if they go into administration now they have to make sure they get 11pts more than the 3rd bottom team to avoid any punishment?!

Not quite right I believe. If, after the March deadline the deduction of 10 points does not result in relegation the points deduction is carried over to next season to ensure there is a punishment.

EG Watford go into administration today.
If they finish in the bottom 3 anyway - relegated and start next season in Div 1 on -10
If the finish outside bottom 3 by less than10 points the deudction applies this season, they get relegated and start in Div1 on 0
If they finish outside bottom 3 by more than 10 points they stay in Championship but start next year on -10.

I think!

I think that's pretty much it though depends on where the club finished. For example, if Brum go in to admin, finish 2nd and then are deducted 10pts they've effectively been relegated.

Perhaps no one wanted to pay anything like a decent sum for a player who may be a free agent very shortly. And maybe the player knows this too so it wouldn't have been in his interests to leave in a way that would probably see him lose significant sums ?

Comments in the press today suggest that Saints may struggle to complete their fixtures....

If that did happen presumably all their results for the season would be removed from the league table.

Which would be a significant boost for us (they lost twice to Brum and Sheff Utd....)

Although I would rather they survived and we gained promotion on our own efforts.

Seeing as it's so close to the end of the season (only 6 more games for them after tomorrow) then I see no reason why they wouldn't complete their fixtures even if the league had to bail them out with some interim cash for a month.

Wouldn't be the league - it's usually the PFA that steps in to pay players' wages for a while.

League / PFA / Some local benefactor - the sentiment is still the same.

Out of interest, who did it for Gretna when Mileson pulled his cash out?

The administrators will take that into account as necessary costs to ensure the club meet their commitments - presumably it'll come out of match income.

If the administrators decide the club is not worth trying to save, then they'll wind it up and not play any more matches, but there's no way that would happen - the way the creditors would get the most money is if the club was sold to a new buyer as a going concern.

...and therein lies the problem. When times were good buyers were hard to find, now it will be almost impossible.

I have heard they have 24 days to find a buyer.

Mildly irritating, that 24 days. Presumably if they didn't complete their fixtures then all their results would be scrubbed out - which would be good news for URZ having dropped 5 points to them.

Not that one should be so selfish as to wish that to happen.

If they go bust before the end of the season, now we would technically be second with Birmingham a point behind.

Now I do not like to see teams hit the wall but let's be honest, would any of us rather they survive than us going back up, or at least having a much better chance?

if the points we "gained" or brum "lost" as a result of saints going bust sent us up everyone would say our promotion was somewhat tarnished

I would not want that

Nobody wants to see them go bust.

Plus the talk of points being gained/lost is an absolute fairytale. Never going to happen

bobby m's syrup I don't believe that any true football supporter, regardless of which team, will gloat at this news. That said, I remember a time, perhaps 25-30 years ago, (when Reading were in the doldrums and the Saints, a moderately successful top tier outfit), when Southampton FC ran a quite aggressive advertising campaign in and around Reading.

If the Saints do fold, can we expect their fans to follow Bournemouth?...Possibly. Pompey?...Never! That leaves little ol Reading. Perhaps Sir John had better dust off those stadium extension plans.

Doh! I forgot Aldershot. Nearer than us and Hampshire by a squeak.

I remember that, they used to advertise there forthcoming games on the back page of the Post which used make me mad, especialy as they were at the Dell at the time and most games were sold out. I would be sorry to see them go bust, but you can't help but feel they have bought this on themselves.

No fan can really control which numpty buys or takes control of their club. Man Utd fans couldn't and there are more of them than rats. If Maxwell had got his hands on us would the Thames valley Royals have been our fault?
