Best games at Elm Park?

by Thaumagurist* » 01 May 2009 16:09

I won't stick up a poll just yet, I need some nominations first.

To get the ball rolling, how about the 4-2 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers after McGhee buggered off, in 1994?

And what about the 2-0 win over Brighton, to secure the second division championship at the end of the 1993-4 season?

Oh and the Coventry Simod Cup semi-final. I feel the goosebumps about that one.....

Division One: 21st April 1995
READING 2 Bolton 1

Lovell (15th Min), Nogan (87th min)
Att: 13,200

I'm going to remember this game forever as one of the most amazing atmospheres every witnessed at Elm Park. The Reading faithful were brilliant and the South Bank sung the Royals to a memorable victory over a team who were supposed to be the best in the division. Second best maybe over the Royals. 'We are on our way to Wembley' and the classic 'are you watching Mark McGhee' echoed across Reading. The chants of 'Blue Army' rung out around Elm Park for about 15 minutes solid in the second half. Shortly after Nogan scored the goal that toppled Bolton and put Reading points clear of Bolton and ever closer to securing a play off place.

Elm Park was mainly before my time but I was lucky enough to see us beat Bolton 3-2 once after they had come down from the Premiership and they were top of the league. I think it may have been the first time we played them since Wembley.

No, it's not.

Thank you for your nomination, it's certainly worthy of inclusion in the poll.

September 1976

Reading 1 Port Vale 1

Was the best game for me... my first Reading game and been a supporter for the following 32 years even though I have never lived anywhere near Reading.

That aside... it has to be the Plymouth game.

sorry Howser, not a reading win, but an honourable 2-1 defeat in the League Cup (Burnley ...Alex Stephenson,Leighton James, Bryan Flynn et-all were second in the "old" Premier at the time)

Dickie Habbin being our scorer

The Tranmere score was actually 5-0 - I missed it as too young to go to an evening match!

Agree Plymouth 4-3 takes some beating

Barnsley 7-0 1979/80 was good as well.

Wolves 1-0 1978/79? First Div Vs 4th Div - Pat Earles winner 55 mins.
