Reading v Swindon, October 1976 (?), we'd just been promoted to (what seemed at the time) the promised land of Div 3. We actually started brilliantly that season and won this game 4-1, fanndabbydozy, top three etc.

We ended up relegated.

The League Cup v Burnley in the 74-75 season. Although we lost 2-1 it was a great atmosphere and a good match. Also v Northampton in August '74. Won 3-2. My first league match at Elm Park, a 2-1 win v Torquay Utd. in Nov '70. A cracking volley from Gordon Cumming won the game.

Nostalgia time, love it.

Hard to leave the Plymouth one out, it was amazing at the time, but i think it was topped by:

1. Bolton 95. Friday night, the Southbank was its best ever. What its all about.
2. Coventry Simod Semi 88. The only way you got to Wembley in those days was for a Cup Final. unthinkable for a club like Reading.
3. Brighton 94. nerves all round, Quinns header, on the pitch.

Another one here for Reading 4 Plymouth 3.

Simod Cup v Coventry was a close second.

Another mention here too for Reading 7 Barnsley 0, not for tension but just total enjoyment without pressure.

Thaumagurist* I won't stick up a poll just yet, I need some nominations first.

To get the ball rolling, how about the 4-2 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers after McGhee buggered off, in 1994?

And what about the 2-0 win over Brighton, to secure the second division championship at the end of the 1993-4 season?

Oh and the Coventry Simod Cup semi-final. I feel the goosebumps about that one.....

I would go with Coventry because it was a brilliant atmosphere and turned into an historic occasion with the game finishing so late.
The Coventry fans were very sporting as well. A great night that I will always remember.

The most memorable for me was the 2-1 win over Wolves that denied them a Play-off place at the expense of Barnsley. Archie scoring two goals in the 90+ minutes. Best atmosphere I have experienced as a Reading fan, the South Bank was mental when the second went it and I lost everyone I was stood with after the surge forward and mass celebrations.

Dirk Gently
Ginger Ninjas
Division One: 21st April 1995
READING 2 Bolton 1

Lovell (15th Min), Nogan (87th min)
Att: 13,200

I'm going to remember this game forever as one of the most amazing atmospheres every witnessed at Elm Park. The Reading faithful were brilliant and the South Bank sung the Royals to a memorable victory over a team who were supposed to be the best in the division. Second best maybe over the Royals. 'We are on our way to Wembley' and the classic 'are you watching Mark McGhee' echoed across Reading. The chants of 'Blue Army' rung out around Elm Park for about 15 minutes solid in the second half. Shortly after Nogan scored the goal that toppled Bolton and put Reading points clear of Bolton and ever closer to securing a play off place.

The most memorable for me

I was one of the many locked out that night.

Most definetly, fantastic end to game, Didnt Gilksey get stretchered off? With the South Bank singing "Run, Run, Run Gilksey"

The wins over Southampton in the League Cup in 95 (2-1) and the FA Cup in 97 (3-1) were great experiences for a kid sat on the wall at the front of the Tilehurst End :D beating Premiership opposition seemed to mean a lot more.

Otherwise, the 2-1 over Wolves (Archies goals) and even the 0-0 against Tranmere in the playoffs were great memories. I'd also stick a vote in for the Bolton game in 97, didn't quinny have to go in goal?

Two stand out for me.

Firstly when we beat Mark McGhee's Wolves 2-1 and we were 1-0 down in the 90th minute then Archie scored twice to shut the Wolves fans right up.

Secondly the 3-2 win against Bolton in our first meeting with them at home since we lost to them in the play-offs.

A Trevor Morley hat trick and Quinny in goal for most of the match.

What a day

Reading 2-1 Wolves with two injury time goals from Archie that my mate missed!
The old exchanges with Aldershot.
4-3 Plymouth and the Simod semi.
The Watney cup game against Man United was great but we queued up outside the Southbank from 10.00am only for the stretford enders to break the gates in at about 13.30.
Boxing day against Stockport County standing on the town end.
