I hope Steve's leaving doesn't have the same effect on Reading as Curbishley's had on Charlton.

A legend. A great. A god. We'll never see his like again.

Seems an appropriate time to take a complete break from footie myself for a while. See you all in August when the bandwagon rolls again.

According to many on here his leaving is going to be a catalyst for promotion in the next year or two

The best manager we have ever had who gave us two seasons I never thought I would see.

Ironic that the success he helped bring spoilt us to the point where 4th place is seen as a failure by some.

A thoroughly decent man who we will not truly appreciated until he is gone.

Bless 'em. Sadly, with little money at the club for players, we can only hope to achieve play-offs next season. That has to be the dream anyway.

As Gary Glitter would say, 'Bring on the kids'.

Whether you think it is the "right time" or not, anyone that celebrates this news, or takes opportunity to insult Coppell is an utter cnut, as well as being presumably a brain dead moron.

Thank you for all the great memories Steve

Such as, errr, Coppell himself.

"Managers are judged on results and I feel that, looking back now, we have had more than enough opportunities to have been promoted and we haven’t been. That’s the manager’s fault."

Seriously people. We're not the RFC of 1994-5, we're not the RFC of the 80s, 70s or 60s. Hell, we're not even the RFC of 2002-03 when we finished in exactly the same place and a very similar manner to this season.

The last few years have been outstanding but be glad that we have the infrastructure in place to support further success. It won't be as good as the first time, sure. It never is. But this club doesn't begin or end with any one player, any one squad or any one manager.

Sentiment is what sent us out of the Premiership.

I genuinely hope we can all learn our lessons from that.

Was amazed last night what short memories some fans have when talking about Coppell. I love him, legend, best RFC manager ever and although I doubt he is 100% without blame I think he has been let down my his team.

Very sad to see him go. On wards and upwards now though we have got to sort the team and what went wrong and hit the ground running in August.

Alan Partridge Legend, but the time is right. Hard act to follow but it just had to happen.

What I would say though is the players are a gutless spineless shower and I hoep the 'names' and lads on big money are the first ones out the door, they have let down Coppell and the supporters massively in 2009
Totally agree - trouble is no one will want the likes of SHunt - not on his money and his asking price. I'd let him go for whatever we could get for him mind.

I was encouraged by the likes of Tabb and Harding recently - they WANT to play - they try, they have something to prove (i.e. a regular first team spot) and I hope they stay and they get it.

Perhaps SC saw the writing on the wall last year but decided to give it another bash.I blame the car park crew!
The team seemed pretty rudderleass most of the year in all honesty.Way too much kick and run rather than any purposefull structure or design.

Coppells reign will of course be a massive part of our history but all things must pass.We really need a pretty serious clear out and rebuild over the next few seasons before gracing FTSE league again.
Bottom line ---thanks for all the fish Sir Steve and enjoy the golf.

Very disappointed with Steve Coppell this morning. Not for failing to get us promoted but for not finishing the job he's started. How many really thought on the opening game of the season that we'd get promoted given the rebuilding job that was required? Yet he rebuilt and got us fourth - if it hadn't been such a disjointed season that got us here but instead had steadily built to 4th place I think Steve would still be here and we'd all be feeling disappointed but optimistic for next season.

Lastly, having heard his comments on BBCRB last night I have to say it feels like he must have got the feedback from JM that no, there wouldn't be any money next season for rebuilding despite Doyle, SHunt, Bikey, Harper and NHunt all leaving. He certainly came across that the ball was firmly in JM's court and it looks like JM might well have knocked it straight out of play. I did think his comment 'we must have made a lot of money this season' seemed quite pointed.

Good luck Steve, come back any time you like.

Was he pushed or did he really resign--thats the real question?

I think the time is right for a change including the 'removal' of Dillon and Downes. Coppell has been excellent for Reading but probably needs a break from the game to relax and recharge his batteries. I think he was beginning to lose his grip with the 'panic' loan signings of Kitson and Little. I wonder if he had seen them play recently before committing to their signings or merely signed them on past reputations alone--clearly this gamble did not work and both players looked a shadow of teir former selves. I hope the club makes an early appointment of a new Manager as there is clearly loads to sort out with all the players returning from loans and players out of contracts etc.

With the likely emphsis of promoting the increasing youth talent to the team next season (unless MR Mad is going to splash the cash!) I would like to see a new team in place to atke and develop this exciting talent. How about: Rogers/Dolan/Tidsdale team? By the way a sober Gazzer is now looking for work!!

Steve was the best thing to happen to reading is it long proud history

Without his passion, wisdom and calm under pressure tactics we would would have never tasted the glory of premiership football, and for this i think you

One of the most respected figures in football with the respect of ALL players / fans and managers

Steve you will be missed but will never be forgotton as a true Reading legend, Move over Robin Friday

Good luck with whatever you do, im not only a Reading fan im a Coppell fan too
