I like the idea of Sir Steve becoming Director of Football.

Wasn't Hammond approached by Arsenal last year, perhaps he could be off?

Not sure a new Manager would like Steve hanging around though.

That shows that you don't understand the role of D of F at Reading - it's a bit different here than it is at many other clubs.

JM doesn't know football and doesn't want to, so Nicky Hammond is there to act as the link between the football side and JM - JM's "proxy" if you like, and a go-between through which the manager can ask for players and JM authorise the expenditure.

Presented another way - Nicky Hammond stops awkward questions about football and football finance bothering JM, and when JM wants something to happen on the football side of his business he channels it through Nicky Hammond.

So it's all about managing money, negotiations, contracts etc - all the things that SC hates, with absolutely none of the things he loves about football management.

Off topic a bit, but what the hell has the Premier League got to do with developing future stars?

I can imagine this kind of role exisiting within the FA but not the insular Premier League...unless they're just trying to further encroach on the FA's job.
