Goalkeeping Situation

by moo » 15 May 2009 18:49

Well with Hahnemann gone, how will our goalkeeping situation change?

I suppose the lack of manager doesn't help in predicting, but is Fed good enough to be a #1 Keeper for a team chasing automatic promotion from the Championship in their final year of parachute payments?

If so, are Anderson or Hamer good enough to warm the bench and slot in if called up? i.e we go into this season with the 3 keepers already in the squad and Federici gets ruled out for a few months.

I really don't know enough about Hamer and Anderson, and Hamer may not even sign his new deal to be honest.

This could be a vital area.

Needs to improve his positioning, but aside from that he's ready to make the jersey his own. I'm not sure about those in reserve, Andersen needs to improve and I haven't seen enough of Hamer to make a fair judgement.

I am very much hoping that Hamer does now see this as an opportunity and signs his new deal. I am happy to start the season with Federici and Hamer battling it out for the jersey, Andersen out on loan, and see where that takes us.

No evidence that he's good enough - the last few months were such a mess we can't put our finger on anything or judge Fed's contributions accurately. His kicking was fantastic. But he certainly wasn't outstanding.

No evidence that he's NOT good enoguh either - he may well be given a solid and stable defence in front of him.

I'm not concerned though. If new manager considers him good enough I'd be quite happy with that. If he brings in another lad I'd agree with that also.

Ross Kitteridge, do not forget him.

MOTM for Basingstoke most games that he played (Basingstokes revival coincided with his loan stint).

Another good prospect coming through, and to pre-curse the inevitable "well he was only playing non-league" comments, they get more diverse practice there without the overprotective advantage of poncey league referees.

Probaly good back-up to next seasons #1

Missed something out of my original post, maybe not doubting Federici's first team quality (although this is a very small sample and he is no more proven than Ashdown was!), but he's very young and very inexperienced for a goalkeeper which does worry me slightly if we start the season and then have 2 even less experienced keepers behind him.

New manager looks at youth options who can still be usefully loaned out and Fed, if he decides it's not enough he makes a signing. No problems there at all.

Yes, I'm an idiot.

Hamer, (whom I've championed since his Crawley loan days incidently), may well want to sign on a permanent with League One Brentford next season as an alternative to sitting on the bench.

Andersen, Yes I will give you that one......

Feds, what makes you so sure that he is staying?, he put himself in the shop window big-time last season. It is not inconceivable that some other team may be interested in him.

Now then "Plymouth" please do not call me an idiot

Federici will be No.1 with Andersen backing him up.

When USA got injured a few years back, Jamie Ashdown came in and did a brilliant job. I felt confident at the end of the season that we had a more than competent back up to USA and could genuinely challenge for a starting place. However, ask me if the same applies to Fed then I am really not so sure.

Then again, being the clear first choice would well do marvels for his confidence. And a goalkeeper is only as good as the defenders in front of him.

The person who will be best placed to know will be Sal Bibbo.

i still think its a stupid suggestion. this is feds best opportunity to claim the no.1 spot and if he goes anywhere else i feel he'd be less likely to have that opportunity. anderson will no doubt be number 2 and as for hamer, i agree with you on that. he played alrite at brentford and im sure if he went back he'd be playing every game for them.

dont take the piss that im in plymouth because i was born in reading and ive only got 3 more weeks down here at uni before i move to "London"
