How many of the managers intersted in us would have the option of another club with wads of cash? There are only a handful of clubs with real spending power - the Big four, Man City, if they could be bothered QPR, but after that, we must be a pretty good bet. A chairman that doesn't interfere, great facilities, a bit of cash, a decent squad.

So, Ranieri it is then.

Except you DO need badges to manage or coach. It is a requirement. Allen only got a job with us without the badges because he lied about having them.

But seriously, why on earth would Murty or Parkinson make good managers because they're legendary in club folklore. Remove the oh so important cog of 'played for Reading once' and what do you actually have that's so attractive? Not much (and no badges in Murty's case, unless he's been doing them on the side.)

It's a character and understanding of the game thing isn't it?

Being able to motivate and lead a squad is a big part of being a manager. It doesn't follow that the best captains or best players make the best managers, but having the right character for the role will certainly help.

It's hard to tell from afar how much a player really understands about what the team needs to function properly, how the manager has set them up, and how he manages the personalities in the squad, but in some cases the captain can be quite involved in that.

Yes, but the sheer blind faith that it's the best thing since sliced bread...that's what I fail to understand.

I wish they'd hurry up and announce who it is, then we can get all the 'what a rubbish appointment' and 'we're doomed' stuff out of the way. The suspense is killing me.

I don't think anyone has really shown any blind faith in either of them.

People have expresses an opinion that they might make good managers (largely because of the character that was obvious during their respective Reading careers) and that there is some benefit to them being ex-employees.

I think the ex-employee thing can be over stated, but personally I'd much prefer someone with a true affinity to the club over someone, of roughly equal quality, who didn't know anything about the place. In terms of making it work it can be a strong guide to success because it means that both the manager and Chairman/Director of Football (assuming both were previously there) have an idea of how they'll work together and the incoming manager knows how the club works.

That reduces some of the gamble on how the manager will fit into the culture of the club. Doesn't mean it'll work, but it does give you an advantage.

Yet Coppell after all his years of experience still admits to needing to learn the trade.
