Ian Royal
Deathy £2m?? Only if we're promoted then!

YAWN. Same Jay, same mindless bullshit.

Surman is the sort of player we might go for if the opportunity arose regardless of Coppell's decision. Remember that Hammond plays a big part in identifying players and signing them. :o He may think it's worth going ahead with at that price regardless.

Although £2m seems a lot given Saints financial situation and relegation.

Err, don't think so.

Really? Hammond does the negotiations and a lot of the financial stuff in signing them, but identifying and recommending players is the role of Brian McDermott and the other scouts.

Am I missing something because Surman is reputedly best in central midfield and we already have about 7 players that can fill those two slots. He is less effective out wide and surely that is what we need - someone like the Barnsley guy whose name escapes me or Eagles.

See above. Doesn't Hammond have quite a lot of contacts out in the footballing world?

We only have so many scouts, I doubt very much they are the ones going out and identifying the majority of players we look at. Scouting them once we know about them certainly...

Anyway, I doubt the club are going to let a potential change of manager prevent them making signings they've identified as good ones which will improve Reading. I'm not saying it will happen, just that there is no real reason it shouldn't.

Shame these scouts didn't fancy Chris Eagles are a bargain £1,000,000 when we were crying out for a right winger!

Carling website - Madejski's tweak?

Royals To Test Saints' Resolve For Surman

Andrew Surman could be the first big name departure from Southampton - in a £2million summer move to Reading. Royals boss Steve Coppell is a big fan of the England U21 winger who is likely to quit St Mary's after the club's relegation to League One.

This is the kind of story that's been around so long that there is probably some truth in it.

I can only see that transfer going ahead if we go up. There'll be several Premiership teams interested and the only thing I could see going for us is locality. Tbh I can't see us entering into any transfer/contract discussions until we know which league we're going to be in

We need to keep Shunt, not bring in some young, inexperienced player.

Maybe good backup for development, but straight in - no way

On his way to Cardiff for £1m (out of our reach) as Ledley's proposed replacement, according to reports tonight. Dependant on the money in from Ledley though I should imagine.
