Sir Rodger Doyle
Royalwaster How many of the current crop of lads coming through were here when BR was in charge of the academy? Anyone know?

Cox, Hamer, Pierce, Karacan, Henry, Kelly, Church and Davies iirc.

Cox went to Swindon a season and a half ago.

Not in a good way.

Royal Rother BBC Radio now reporting that "Brendan Rodgers has left Watford and APPEARS bound for Reading".

Now reporting that "Brendan Rodgers, having left Watford earlier today, is believed to be getting closer to completing a deal that would see him join Reading..."

Agent Balti Christ all frickin' mighty, what a bunch of hoopla over bugger all. I understand Watford fans being mightily pee'd off as they know they were onto a winner. As we will soon see ourselves, I hope. But to get all proud that this isn't the "Reading Way" and our "reputation has been tarnished", what a load of ol' pish.

Let's not kid ourselves for a minute, this is a blinkered industry. Players have clauses to the nth degree, nowadays managers have them too. Loyalty is bobbins. If Rodgers and Watford were such happy bed-fellows, then why on earth would he have agreed to a £500k clause in his contract (and only 12 month rolling contract at that) - why? Because it's football, it's incestuous, dirty and not half as romantic as people think.

I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if Rodgers had a specific clause in his contract that if the Reading job came up, then he would like to be considered. It happens, we all know it does. To say that we didn't even speak to Brendan before Coppell left (or even if Coppell was even a party to sounding him out as a potential manager) isn't being naive. OK, we may have had to stump up the cash first, but if he's got a clause in his contract then he's fair game. Rodgers didn't have to resign to get the job. We did what was agreed by all parties!

Let's not forget our own tricks of giving *cough* highly rated players new contracts to inflate their worth under the banner of "to quell any further rumours" (but then perform like utter gash, but that's besides the point.) It's not quite in the same league as triggering a release clause in a contract, but it's far and away from "I love this club, I will stay as long as the club wants me to." Otherwise known as "Show me the money or I'm off."

I'm surprised that this still surprises people.

(aside from the blaspheming at the beginning that is)

Anyone else becoming a little concern that there might be some complications in terms of personal terms?

Either they're waiting for the PC in order to add some drama to the whole thing, or there is a fiscal issue over the whole thing.

But not at Reading, so how is that going to be helpful? You might as well be Dodger Royal with insight like that.

Volvicanus Very sorry to not troll through all 71 pages... but could someone give me a precis on Rodgers? Not history - I can get that on wiki - just what kind of game he tends toward, what kind of players, what kind of temperament? Or point me towards that info?

He likes to knock the ball about on the floor. :) and as to players he likes, sorry, can't help you there. But being as he has been involved in both our academy and Chelsea's academy, I assume he won't be afraid to use the kids. Time will tell.

Nope, I don't, but I'd guess he'd know most of the ones coming through now. And given the recent mutterings from Sir Mad and others about "the kids being alright", I 'd hazard predictions that we won't we dabbbling too much in the transfer market this summer and that the average age of the team will be a lot less next season. It's thus likely to be an interesting one for either all the right or all the wrong reasons. Right would be my final prediction.

Not at all. Best to take their time and get clauses in place that satisfy everybody.

Clubs that announce a vacancy, invite applications, interview and announce the new manager all in the space of 2 or 3 days are generally going to have a weak or one-sided contract that is no good as a guiding document for either manager or club.

True, but it wouldn't hurt to have something on the official site saying we are now in talks! Surely they must realise the fans are eager for news.

I hope and have decided to believe that you are right. I look forward to the "typical" Reading conference tomorrow

SRD are you seriously suggesting we're going to re-sign Cox? Is this just what you want or do you have inside info?

By the way, thanks for the list - it's an impressive list and I guess it's probably credit to BR that we've got such a talented crop coming through. Will be very interesting to see how much involvement they will have under BR - more than under SC? I'm starting to really look forward to the new season ....

The Sun BRENDAN RODGERS has revealed how Jose Mourinho advised him to take the Reading job.
Rodgers, 36, quit Watford yesterday after just 192 days in charge to succeed Steve Coppell at the Madejski Stadium.

He began his coaching career with the Royals before being head-hunted by former Chelsea boss Mourinho, who is now in charge of Inter Milan.

Rodgers said: “I spoke with Jose before coming here. He was great for me as he helped nurture my career. He’s someone I can go to and get advice.

“When the approach came from Reading I spoke with him and he said ‘go for it’.

“He knew Reading when they were in the Premier League. He remarked that the atmosphere at the stadium was fantastic.”

The Watford Observer Brendan Rodgers says he would not have left Watford for any other club but it is his dream to become just the second manager in Reading’s history to take them into the Premier League.

In an exclusive interview with the Watford Observer, Rodgers thanked the Hornets fans for their support, which he said was crucial in securing Championship survival, and hoped the Vicarage Road faithful would understand his decision as time wore on.

Rodgers was a big hit with the Watford fans after steering the club away from relegation but the relationship with some has turned sour following his departure.

The 36-year-old had been linked with the Reading job since Steve Coppell’s resignation on May 13, but he previously distanced himself from a return to his former club insisting he was ‘loyal’ to Watford and a man of ‘integrity’.

The fans have now criticised him for making such comments following yesterday’s (Thursday’s) announcement that he will be taking over the club he joined as a player at 16 and went on to coach for, for almost ten years.

However, he said: “I can honestly say with my hand on my heart that right up until last Friday, when Reading made an approach to Watford, that my full focus was on Watford and even up until yesterday [Wednesday], when the deal wasn’t completed, I had a meeting with [coach] Malky Mackay looking forward so my commitment to Watford never waivered.”

He added: “The speculation was going on for the last two months, and particularly in the last month, about the Reading job and I was mentioned with it but I found that disloyal to answer the speculation when I was in the Watford job.

“So despite all the speculation that surrounds football these days, my mind was clear on where we were going at Watford and it was only on Friday when there was an approach that I wanted to speak to Reading.”

The Royals director of football and close friend of Rodgers Nick Hammond made a formal approach to Watford last Friday, which was initially rejected.

The Hornets chairman Jimmy Russo dismissed their advances for four days but after Reading met a release figure in Rodgers’ contract and the Northern Irishman expressed his desire to talk to the Royals, Russo then attempted to negotiate as much compensation as possible.

By Tuesday the two clubs had agreed a fee which would land Watford more than £500,000 initially and the sum involved could rise to around £1m should Reading gain promotion.

Although it will not be announced initially, the Watford Observer understands assistant manager Dean Austin, football consultant Frank Lampard Snr and football physiologist Karl Halabi will also join the Royals eventually.

Rodgers used to often train with Reading from the age of 13 and officially signed for the club when he was 16.

He never played for the club as his career was ended by injury at 20 but he joined their coaching staff and became Academy director before moving to Chelsea in 2004.

He said: “I had been at Reading for a long time and left there only to go and work for the best day-to-day manager in the world in Jose Mourinho.

“So for me at Watford, I was happy and I was looking forward until Reading made the approach.

“I am a loyal person and people who know me will know that but Reading was an incredible opportunity for me and one that may not come again.”

He added: “I want to be only the second manager in the club’s history to take the club into the top flight. That is a big motivation to me.”

Rodgers insists he was happy at Watford and when asked whether he would have stayed if it was any other Championship club making the approach, he replied “Absolutely.”

He added: “Everything was happy in my life and I leave Watford with sadness for the supporters and the people of Watford because I felt a real connection and always will because it is part of my story.

“It is a part of my story that I will never forget and the decision to move to Watford was absolutely the right one.

“I am sure the supporters, once they have had a few days, will understand my decision. I will forever hold that period in my life as a special one.”
