Jay, when exactly did Coppell say he wasn't being given any money or the backing of the board?

I think he was happy with what he had, and I think we all were until January. No need to spend money for the sake of it.

I just find it hard to believe that a manager that apparently had millions to play with, refused to spend it. But maybe he he did.

And if there was unspent money, where is it now? I bet we don't see Rodgers spend much this summer. Maybe one big signing as we used to have, around £800,000 and a couple of bargain basement signings. But not these missing millions.

A lot of the money was used to pay off existing debts, so I don't think there's lots of money splosing about. It does mean though as we have done so, we can risk a bit if BR puts a good case to MrMad. But don't expect a pot of £x million just sitting there waiting to be spent. You've also got to put it into perspective that currently we're probably spending beyond our means were it now for the parachute payments - the club has to calculate the risk of not getting promoted this year and having to survive without these payments.

Certainly did - and was also more worried that a new signing would cause more damage to the team dynamic than improve the team.

So the budget is looking healthy this summer! Excellent. I look forward to your opinions as to why we spend next to bollock all this summer.

Hmmm, that was January 2008, when we had a PL-sized income side of the balance sheet.....

The money from Kitson, Shorey etc sales?
The money this summer from Doyle's likely departure, Hunt hopefully also?

Wont see any of it! We have probably (and this probably generous) about £1.5m for transfers this summer. But nothing of the money we apparently chose not to spend.

My maths is poor, but this is how I see it:

£13m - profit from being in the Prem over 2 seasons
£10m - sales of Kitson, Shorey, Sonko
£11m - Prem parachute 1
£11m - Prem parachute 2
-------
£45m - Total

Plus potentially

£10m - sales of Doyle, Shunt, Harper

Now I know all about the fact we don't get all the money from sales up front (or indeed all the quoted sums), and that we currently operate at about a £4-5m trading loss when in the Championship, but there's no doubt those two years in the Prem set us up nicely indeed. I also have absolutley no doubt that one of Brendan Rodger's tasks as set by the board is to reduce the overall wage bill and make us less reliant on big money incoming transfers. Plus we have made a loss for god knows how long and some of the money has gone to offset this.

That said, if it transpires that we have llittle or no money to spend (when even the likes of Forest are bidding £2m for players), then it sends a pretty clear signal that we are here for the long term.

FWIW, I think we missed our chance to become a more stable Prem club by not going up last season. Just like the year before, a lack of investment at critical times - when just one player may have made the difference without risking a financial meltdown - could have cost us dearly in the long run.

Rodgers has already said on BBRB when asked about new players coming into club, that he feels that the squad is good enough....and that if there were any movements out, he would have to consider possible replacements - as someone said earlier, Im sure him getting the job was on the proviso that he didnt start waving the cloth cap at the chairman for funds....Howe has already set it up by saying that the yuong players are the future - not doubting that - but it firmly makes a statement that there arent going to be players coming in

I believe that children are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children's laughter remind us how we used to be

i think you've got that wrong !!

How much firmer a statement could be made than this :

Nigel Howe on the OS Of course some players are going to be brought in to assist them and keep them together, but I think we have a fantastic Academy, it's tremendous

Bigging up the youngsters but stating that we'll also add to the squad.

It would be odd if Rodgers had come in knowing his hands would be tied in terms of how he sets his squad up. Frankly I would expect a major reason for him leaving Watford would have been that there was no money there to develop the team. I would be amazed if we are not active in the market this summer. I'm not expecting huge numbers coming in but to think we will buy no one seems to go against the noises coming out of the club (OK, I know they are not always 100% reliable !)

There is zero chance we will sign no players by the end of the transfer window in August.

I think Surman looks like a tidy player but lacks a yard of pace to play out wide.

Not sure where hes played for Saints this year but I dont think we need a CM.

I would prefer R Wallace, J Cambell Ryce, sign Mcanuff and then play Kebe on left.

Good to see others are seeing the easy logic here.

I've made this point very clearly on other threads and haven't had a single even half-decent comeback.

Let's assume Coppell just pigheadedly refused to spend millions available to him on transfers AND WAGES.

Those untouched millions (and in fact FAR MORE SINCE with big player sales and parachute payments - although a small amount of these extra funds will be eaten up with the wage/attendance deficit of being in the champ) will assuredly be at the disposal of BR, who needs them more than ever now given we have to practically rebuild the team.

I hope those with their heads up Madejski's rectum have been right all along and he really is intent on spending the money but was just extremely unlucky to have the only manager in the history of football to refuse to do so.

It's already "all gone quiet over there" ever since I raised this point several weeks ago from the once vociferous gang of the Poor Old Madman camp.

I watch and wait with glee and anticipation.

You fail to realise the club doesn't just have £,£££,£££s sitting around waiting to be spent. You ask for the money and it is made available. If you don't it is used elsewhere, offsetting debts, going on other projects. It might be different if we had a positive bank balance. But we don't.

II'm willing to be it's not like Champ Man, where you get given your budget to spend in a separate pot and then it rolls over. You dip in and take what you need from the main finances, providing there is a good enough case and it won't cripple us elsewhere.

£4 million was available for Lescott. When he chose Everon, Coppell didn't just find the next best layer to spend it on, it went back into the kitty. The money, for the right players at the right price, was there, in proportion to where we were as a club. That's now less, as next year if we miss promotion we cannot be saddled with the sort of wages that an expensive signing would require.

I'd guess if he can make a good case, Rodgers will have more money than some, but will not be able to make any promotion or bust type deals. I, for one, am glad of that.
