Arch Rather obviously, it must depend on the candidates. If more than half the clubs are in the north, then the line would have to be drawn a long way up.

The Southern pairings will actually be receiving one more draw. However, due to the first round only accommodating 70 teams, Newcastle and Middlesbrough receive byes as a result of finishing the highest in the league of the other 72 league teams.
Thereby Sout' has 18 draws, North has 17 draws.
The first 35 are seeded (meaning Walsall, who finished 13th in League One are the last seeded team), and the other 35 are unseeded and will be drawn against a seeded side.
Peterborough fall into the Southern category despite being further north than Coventry, as do Shrewsbury who sit higher in the country than Coventry, Walsall, West Brom, Leicester and Peterborough but not Burton.
The seedings determine this draw rather than the geography.
