New Captain Poll

by Z175 » 19 Jun 2009 14:53

Given BR is a Reading man, he probably goes on hob nob quite a bit. Who do we think should be his new captain?

Why is Bikey on there? I can hardly see him giving the team any influence.

Pearce long term without a shadow of doubt and I'd be tempted to give it to him now.

He is my choice as well.

Intelligent, brave, through the ranks - our John Terry.

I'd think he'd need another season to well and truly establish himself as no.1 choice for centre back before he is even considered for the armband. Next season, maybe.

Harper. Long serving, organised and loyal.
On the pitch he organises our midfield - once he was injured/dropped our midfield went to pot and our strikers are verbal enough, as is our defence.
He did a good job last season, even if he wore the armband on his leg.

Harper (if he's still with us), Ingimarrson or, perhaps more likely, one of Rodgers new signings this summer.

I agree long term Pearce looks like a great option, but I think it's too early to throw it on his shoulders.

Armstrong

Ivar is waning and never really seemed vocal enough to me. Harper makes an excellent vice captain but isn't quite armband material for me. Plus it's just another stick for the idiots to beat him with.

Pearce

A bold statement from Rodgers that we are entering a new era.

Pearce isn't a kid anymore, he's got plenty of games under his belt and given that the role is purely ceremonial it really doesn;t matter if he still has some learning to do.

Bikey has his fanbase on here, who might want t o vote for him. I'm not a massive fan, but I'd shortlist him in our top 10 potential new captains ahead of say Kebe and Rosenior and the players we have released.

Stephen Hunt. Hopefully this will entice him to stay.

On the pitch it's ceremonial but in the dressing room, training ground and behind the scenes the club captain plays a pretty signifcant role.

I seem to remember Harper saying he didn't really like that side of it whislt filling in (on the pitch) for Murty and so didn't feel he was best suited to it long term, so maybe that's a black mark against him.

The sort of person who is a 'big character' in the dressing room etc will do it whether they have an armband or not though. Stuart Pearce, Murts, John Terry etc etc would still be and behave the same. I'd agree that by pushing the wrong person into the role you could give them a problem personally or by not having the right characters in the club you suffer. But if you have the right people around which one has the armband is a pretty minor question, and sticking an armband on the wrong person won;t turn them into Bobby Moore.

Agree. He's got to make the side week in week out before he can be considered...but longer term he is the obvious captain.

Be interested to ascertain how old Adie Williams was (and how many starts he'd amassed) before he was given teh job fulltime. Granted it was more than Pearce has at present, but "I like the cut of this man's gib", as they say.
