Televised games - FAO Dirk (or others ITK)

by T.R.O.L.I. » 25 Jun 2009 12:17

Any ideas when Sky and BBC are going to release their early season TV schedules? Over a week since the fixtures came out and would be nice to be able to confidently book some cheap train tickets (without worrying about games being moved).

IIRC last year it was about 2 weeks for Sky & Setanta (!) to make their PL choices, then about a week later than that until Sky announced their FL fixtures. Those were for matches upto the middle of December.

This year there may be differences because there are now different TV companies involved - I'll see what I can find out.

BBC are televising 10 championship games this season. And have rights to show highlights. No more mediocre ITV coverage!

They do indeed, my gr8 m8. Not quite as glamorous as the Premier League but live TV football all the same.

Possibly because it is a meaningful league where all the teams start with a realistic belief that they can win it (and where the top 4 are not predictable right now).

Far be it for me to disagree with the oracle but I thought is was something along the lines of:

Season 07/08

Fixtures came out and Sky announced both PL and FL within a week or so

Season 08/09

Fixtures came out, Sky announce the FL fixtures fairly quickly but (as you allude to) took ages to announce their PL fixtures due to the wranglings with Satanta.

The reason I'm so sure about 08/09 is I remember chuckling about how long it was taking the PL fixtures to be announced when the FL fixtures had already been out for a couple of week.

As you say, due to the BBC having live games, it would be reasonable to expect a slight delay to the release but BBC have only got 10 games and so I can't see many more than 5 of those being pre-Xmas.

I'll leave it in your / STAR's hands to see if you can get any fouther info.

I wouldn't say the top 4 is predictable anymore now that Arsenal is finally on the decline and either Tottenham, Aston Villa, Everton or Manchester City may challenge for a place in the top 4.

A moot point. Arsenal is a singular club and therefore the grammatically correct version is probably Arsenal IS on the decline; but common usage in UK English is to pluralise when describing clubs. It is very American to talk of a football club in the singular (Reading IS ..... )

Agreed - different style-guides have different views on this. Typically Arsenal are .... but Arsenal FC is .....

Getting back to the subject, though : the PL has never been won by a team that didn't finish in the top two the previous season. So that's Man Utd or Liverpool for next year, then.....

I wouldn't even shit on Chelsea to be fair, so you can forget me putting any money on them. My shit's far too classy for that.

My Money is on Liverpool.

Man U are being priced out of everything, so they will be lucky to sign anyone of substance.

And no players want to go to Chelsea - Real Madrid is the new Chelsea...
