CMRoyal we cannot risk all on another Premier League bid. That chance has gone whether we like it or not.

Perhaps not, there will be some others who will get into financial difficulties at some point and we'll still be in a healthy financial position to take advantage. Whether that happens remains to be seen.

What I meant was we have to do it another way. I seriously believe we'll cut our losses over S Hunt this time, for example, rather than doing what we can financially to retain him.

Mr Mad “Even though that was the price we don’t have all £6.5million of it right now, so it is not as simple as that.”

Isn't it Sir John? Because presumably the same applies to any player we sign, too?

If we sign a player on a staged basis then we'd have to budget for paying the maximum for him.

If we sell a player on a staged basis then we should budget on receiving the minimum for him (clauses not triggered, buyer goes bust...).

Isn;t that basic prudence ?

We could end up ahead on either of them but in the short term it's a significant difference between being a buyer and a seller I think.

Basically the roof has fallen in and now we've got to use that little bit of insurance money wisely in steadying the walls and rebuilding the aforementioned roof with new slates - and to a slightly different design.

Just slingling a new roof on without checking the walls could work but most likely will mean a bigger collapse later on.

Cox has just gone to West Brom for £1.5M plus add-ons, so that's another little boost to the transfer kitty.

Disappointing we didn't go for him / get him. But plenty more fish in the sea.

Rodgers is apparently closing in on Cork, Mancienne and Bertrand according to the chronicle.

If we can get these 3 and Smith then we'll be in a very strong position IMHO.

If (and its a very big if) we get these players I agree. Despite what some on here say about him Mancienne at this level is a high quality defender.

Who are you talking about? Can't be Cox as you didn't rate him!

Yep. If they do well and we get promoted I'd imagine we might get 1 of them permanantly.

Slightly perturbed that bar Smith (and there is no guarantee he'll come) that none of those are a striker given we've let 2 go and Noel Hunt is still struggling with injury.

Most likely Cork, that. Mancienne may be looking for more playing time too, so if we're in the Premiership that's another possibility.

Frightening really isn't it.

RFC spent next to nothing in their 2 years in the Premiership, in fact they probably made a profit on the net player buys and sells fees, whilst reaping the rewards of the enormous cash injection that it brings. The last year and a bit has seen an exodus of players that must have made nearly £20million for the club + the £22million from 2 years parachute money. Yet the budget was overspent last year. £8-9million in, Under £2million out on players fees.

Of course salaries and the like would have gone up, absolutely certainly with relegation sti[ulations in, still a fairly high salary bill I can imagine last year but surely covered by the mass sales?!. Again this year already we've seen cuts from the wage bill and a club record sale, with potentially more to follow.

I just don't understand how Reading can have next to nothing to spend, it doesn't add up. Even the likes of Derby and Birmingham and all the other clubs that have been relegated in recent years have had cash (serious cash) to spend on players. How have Reading become the only club to seemingly be hindred by getting promoted to the Premiership?

They have probably had unsustainable business models that are totally reliant upon the generosity / ego of the owners.

If only it was down to the ego of the owners - we would be competing with Manchester City for all the big money signings!
