Ian Royal We also know from Rodgers that we have targets and are pursuing them. As ever, not in the media.

Well, apart from Tommy "It's one that I'm hopeful we can tie up soon" Smith, of course ...

It's the return of the annual "6 days into a two month transfer window and we haven't replaced the whole squad yet. Where's the ambition?" bullshit fest. We've never been a club to piss away shed loads of money in the transfer market or do our deals publicly, except maybe under Burns and look where that got us. Have we actually missed out on any one yet? Tommy Smith maybe but at £1.8m I'm oxf*rd glad we have.

Thank you for that fantastically insightful contribution.

I'll pass a memo to Brendan to only buy good players. Clearly the strategy of deliberately buying rubbish was failing.

Whatever the Reading way has been in the past, it wasn't the manager coming out in the press and saying that a player who's subject of an accepted bid from another team "wants to come here". This approach makes me very uneasy.

Breath of fresh air, though. I always had the feeling before Buck's time that every player was forced to come to this London-but-not-quite-Club.

Agreed, can't say I'm impressed by that either, you can see why Watford are angry and saying we've been tapping him up to move here.

Knowing how much of a shitfit you lot would throw if someone was saying the same thing abour a Reading player, it's amusing to see Rodgers' comments accepted so gleefully on the board.

Yeah it's nice to watch a transparent interview and hear some positivity after Coppell's guardedness, but he shouldn't be saying things like that about Smith, really.

Its just mind games. We were trying to buy the player, sheffield utd come on with a huge offer because they have this cash off of a sudden and price us out. Its our way of saying " fvk off".

All building up nicely for proper local derbies with Watford this season. Seeing as Luton have sunk without trace and *ldersh*t and Wyc*mbe aren't worth the effort this is probably the best thing that could happen for both clubs!

It seems that Rodgers open and honest policy is smacking him in the mouth!

It seems Rodgers has been having some friendly chats with Smith on his mobile.

The following does not really correspond to us doing business quietly!!!

Watford have reacted angrily to Brendan Rodgers' comments that striker Tommy Smith wants to join Reading.

Former Hornets boss Rodgers is keen to take Smith to Reading, but his old club have rejected a 'derisory' offer from their Championship rivals.

A £1.8million bid from Sheffield United has been accepted by Watford, but Rodgers claims the 29-year-old would prefer a move to the Madejski Stadium.

"He wants to be here," Rodgers told the Reading Evening Post. "He's a player that has turned down a number of moves.

"There were a number of other offers for Tommy and then one big one came in (from Sheffield United).

"He doesn't have to go anywhere unless he wants to. But there's been good communication.

"Nick Hammond's been having good communication with the chairman there and hopefully, I'm not sure how quickly, there will be some sort of resolution on it."

Disappointment
However, Watford chairman Jimmy Russo has responded to Rodgers' comments and admits to being 'disturbed' by what the Reading manager has had to say.

Russo told the club's official website: "It is with disappointment that I have read Brendan Rodgers' comments regarding our player Tommy Smith.

"I am somewhat disturbed as to how Brendan knows Tommy's future intentions.

"His comments are not very respectful to the fans and the staff at Watford Football Club and he must not forget that Watford gave him his first managerial opportunity

"Reading have failed to meet our valuation of the player in question, in fact last week I labelled the bid 'derisory'."

It's a bit of ducking and diving by both clubs in order to get the best deal possible.

However, I'd prefer they do it behind closed doors.

I don't care about Tommy Smith unless he signs for us. Not if, or maybe...............just facts.

Any danger of transfer speculation ?

by Crowthorne Royal » 13 Jul 2009 08:29

.....I don't know about you boys and girls but I'm getting a bit fed up waiting for news of possible signings. Less than 4 weeks to go before the season starts.
Any ideas ? Legitimate stories ?

NB - An insider I know at the club told me that this season would be OK, and then 10/11 would be a huge promotion driver in to The Prem. I haven't questioned it too much, however, surely a better chance next year with parachute payments......if we ever use them to buy anyone decent!

We won't move in the transfer market until all the clubs who intend spending some money have made their various moves. Expect us to be sifting through the leftovers and rejects a week or two before the transfer deadline to see what we can cobble together on the cheap.

I've been prepared to be patient up to now, secure in the belief that our management team is carefully weighing up its options before signing the appropriate players, even if they have to be loan signings. But I have to say that as each day passes I edge a little closer to the fear that we will be hearing a Coppellesque "I think the squad's strong enough as it is" comment from Clodagh before the month is out.

You need to learn some patience. And as somebody else has already said, try checking out the UR&G. The only problem with that place is that it is full of bullshit.
