I share the opinion above that it's Rodgers' way of trying to get his man. He wants the player, the player wants to come here, but someone has to put up the money...

Local rag up here in Sheffield (The Star) confirms that Smith has rejected the Blades and is apparently training with Reading!!!

Meanwhile, United are battling to resurrect their move for Tommy Smith after failing to agree personal terms with the Watford midfielder.

Smith, who is reportedly training with Championship rivals Reading, is understood to have rejected United's first offer.

Smith's status at Vicarage Road has complicated the bargaining process but sources close to the deal insist common ground can still be found, assuming, of course, that Blackwell is still willing to negotiate.

Thaumagurist* Didn't Pardew once talk about bringing Paul Di Canio (or somebody) to Reading and the people at Wet Sham weren't happy about it?

Spacey, let it go. Stop calling them Wet Sham. You're not 9 years old.

Errr - nowhere. They've got permission to talk to the player, we haven't.

But all this about Watford reporting us is just postering. What evidence have they got? Unless they've been tapping into BR or TS's mobiles or TS has admitted talking to BR they're going to look pretty stupid in front of the Football League as Reading will just deny everything and put it down to a bit of naivity from BR and they know that.

Can't see us paying £1.8 million him. Last year was his best ever in front of goal with 17 but the year before that he scored 7 in 46 league appearances at this level. £1.8 million? Nah.

Something along the lines of £1.2m upfront with a further £400,000 if we're promoted. I can see that happening. Not being involved today could be a promising indicator though.

How much of the Watford first team did play?

He's on the bloody bench ffs! Hardly an indicator that he is joining another club.

Fees are not usually big sums upfront anymore. I'd expect to see something closer to £500k upfront. £500k in installments and further payments on promotion / goals scored / appearances.

Certainly from what those more itk than me have said in the past.

As you say - we don't have permission.
