Cork City set to be wound up

by Reading Republican » 27 Jul 2009 18:32

Sounds like Reading FC's 'excellent relationship' with Cork City may be coming to an end very soon :( :(

The League of Ireland Premier Division has been struck a crushing blow with the news that Cork City are set to be wound up.

The announcement comes on the back of a second sitting at the High Court over the club's inability to come to an agreement with the Revenue Commissioners over unpaid tax.

Club owner Tom Coughlan was unable to pay even half the amount owed, despite a recent high profile friendly clash with Ipswich and the sales of Denis Behan and Colin Healy.

The club have yet to make a statement on the issue, but have until Friday to lodge an appeal or pay the full amount outstanding.

I wonder if they had kept the sell on clause they had on Doyle if they would have been able to stick around?

That's right. They were desperate for money before, so we settled on £200k for Doyle.

Had they waited, 10% would've brought them £650k, but they didn't have that option seeing as they were desperate.

They'd probably have gone in January.

However, that could have saved us any payment since if they'd gone we wouldn;t have had to pay them anything.

The club that gave us Doyle, Long and Mooney is no more. Sad news indeed, all for the sake of 360,000 Euros

Reading bought out the sell-on clause in KD with a cash sum to Cork in November last year - I think for something like 200k Euros.

Without that they'd probably not have survived this long.

Maybe Reading should link with Cork City and have them as a feeder club...

Hello all!
City are in big trouble! Not sure if anything can be done, but.....

If you can afford to buy a ticket for the Cork City v Bray Wanderers game on Friday please do so today or tomorrow. If a few thousand non-regulars do the same we might have a chance.

Tickets can be bought from the kiosk in Daunt Square or at the Club Store at 22 Sullivan's Quay. Also here:

Cork City set to be wound up

The League of Ireland Premier Division has been struck a crushing blow with the news that Cork City are set to be wound up.

The announcement comes on the back of a second sitting at the High Court over the club's inability to come to an agreement with the Revenue Commissioners over unpaid tax.

Club owner Tom Coughlan was unable to pay even half the amount owed, despite a recent high profile friendly clash with Ipswich and the sales of Denis Behan and Colin Healy.

The club have yet to make a statement on the issue, but have until Friday to lodge an appeal or pay the full amount outstanding.

It remains unclear as to how the winding up of Cork will affect the league, however there has been speculation that all games in which they have been involved this season will become null and void, with all points won against them being wiped.

Cork City do not own their home ground of Turner's Cross, which is the property of the Munster FA, leaving the option of a new team to be created to replace the soon to be defunct City.

However, an official statement on the club's website, http://www.corkcityfc.ie, has revealed the club will continue to trade and will do all it can to preserve League of Ireland football in the city.

The statement read: 'Following High Court proceedings today, Cork City FC has been given until Friday to settle its liabilities to the Revenue.

'The club is doing everything within its power to settle these liabilities and asks that our supporters and the people of Cork get behind us to help us to save the club. It is the intention of the club to continue trading and we are determined to do everything in our power to overcome this hurdle.

'At this time, the support of all is vital to us emerging from this situation and the continuation of League of Ireland football in Cork. As we look ahead to Friday night's game against Bray Wanderers at Turner's Cross, we ask the people of Cork to come out and support the team and buy tickets for the game in advance of Friday through our kiosk in Daunt Square and our club store at 22 Sullivan's Quay.'

The FAI have issued a statement to say they are 'disappointed that Cork City has failed to meet its obligations to the Revenue Commissioners.'

They also said they are 'disappointed and concerned that the club finds itself in this situation.'

The statement also confirmed that the FAI will meet with representatives of Cork City and will continue to monitor the situation ahead of Friday's deadline.

Do you think that's a bit immoral?

There's be invective being spouted on here if, say, Chelsea, did something similar to us with the Sidwell sell on clause if we were in dire straights.

Didn't Cork ask for the money? Should Reading have taken the moral high ground and refused?

They were in dire straits when we sold the sell-on clause and needed all the money they could get.

The full amount at the time that we paid them was zero.
