Seems that this could well be a done deal. Decent keeper by all accounts.

I do wish we'd spend money on a new striker, winger or centre back TBH.

Rovers fans call him flapper. We already have Fed, so no thanks.

Surely we don't want "Flapper Phillips". He makes Fed look like Gordon Banks!

Nooooooooooo. I want Federici and Hamer to be given a chance. We need centre backs and strikers, not goalkeepers.

That would be a  move. Decent enough keeper but would we really need one? I'd be surprised if it was Reading.

loan CB, or a long term replacement for Ivar / replacement for Bikey if he's on his way out would be good. Goalie is not necessary. Hesitency and nerves shown against Drogba and Anelka are understandable IMO.

Especially with Rosenior and a "midfielder" infront of him.

Never know what a managers thinking, maybe he wants more experience in that position at the club? Maybe not instantly number 1 but as a squad player or f federici continues to bea bit up and down. Apparently Phillips release clause toa CCC club is £75,000 so even reading could afford that.

Perhaps this is all wild specualtion, they've sorted out a year loan for Andersen, maybe a 3-6month loan for Hamer and bring Phillips in to challenge Federici?

Have no idea s i say wild speculation. Their vital site is very well informed by all accounts, this news breaks, they think it's Reading, then the day after the transfer news is up, coincidence? We'll see!

Well I've nailed my colours to the mast on this one and am prepared for being wrong.

I don't think you can read too much inot the OS and text service stuff. We've been being told for days that a signing or two was imminent and most o fthe suggestions have been that it would be a defender.

I'd agree that is of the more urgent list,as is a decent centre forward. That's a higher priority than anything, but you just never know how a manager sees things. A goalkeeper is a very specialist postion obviously and lots of times a new manager wants his own goalkeeper. You never know.

Has anyone actually seen him play? I have and he really isn't that good, no way a CCC standard.

Yes I have seen him many times both for Rovers and City before that and you are correct-he is not very good and his nickname "flapper" is well deserved. He is also known as a bit of a winer. I doubt very much if he would accept being no2 to Fed so if this rumour is true someone must think he is better! Certainly the Rovers fans round here are very pleased that they have just signed another keeper (albeit on loan) according to Rovers "as competition for Phillips" and would not be sorry to see him leave.

PS
Have now seen this in Bristol Evening Post which I am very pleased to say seems to indicate that he is stopping at Rovers

Small steps can see Rovers stride into play-offs, says Steve Phillips[/b]
Tuesday, August 04, 2009, 07:00

Goalkeeper Steve Phillips is hoping that continued gradual improvement will help Bristol Rovers challenge for a top-six place this seasonThe Pirates start their campaign against Leyton Orient at the Memorial Stadium on Saturday and will be looking to better their 11th-place finish last time around.
That was an improvement on their 16th-place finish in their first League One season, following promotion two years ago, and Phillips insisted that similar progress could ignite a play-off challenge.
He said: "We have made small steps over the last couple of years. People have wanted to see us make gradual improvement and that is what has happened for us.
"We finished 16th in out first season in this division and then 11th last year. If we can improve on that again we won't be far off the top six, seven or eight. If we are around that sort of position when the last four games of the season come around it will be all to play for.

"That is what the squad and the management believe is achievable and I don't think we would be happy with anything less than that."
The bookies are lukewarm on Rovers' chances of a successful promotion bid in a league now littered with former Premiership sides and clubs determined to spend big in a bid to achieve elevation to the Championship.
"Every game is going to be difficult because of the quality of the teams in the league," Phillips agreed. "The main threats will be the obvious ones – Leeds, MK Dons and the three that have come down from the Championship. There are always a few surprise teams and we are hopeful that we can be one of those.
"There are teams who have spent a fair bit of money, but that doesn't always automatically bring success."
Paul Trollope and Lennie Lawrence have been measured in their summer recruitment, with the emphasis on quality rather then quantity.
Defender Carl Regan, midfielder Dominic Blizzard and young goalkeeper Fraser Forster have been drafted in, but Rovers are also set to benefit from the return of defender Danny Coles from a long-term knee injury.
They have also managed to retain the services of star striker Rickie Lambert, whose 29 goals last season saw him share the honour of League One's leading goalscorer with Swindon Town's Simon Promising stopper Forster, 21, was signed on an initial one-month loan from Newcastle United on Friday and will provide a challenge for the number one spot. Phillips said: "The competition is healthy. A club needs that in all areas of the pitch if they are to do well.
"Mike Green has gone out on loan, so somebody needed to be brought in."

Steve Phillips has been left on the bench today.

Rovers manager Paul Trollope has also refused to talk about the rumours during an interview on local radio.
