Non - League thread 2009/10

by Alan Partridge » 14 Aug 2009 13:38

Started for the likes of Maidenhead and Basingstoke last week and for the likes of Southern Premier Didcot town on Saturday away at Clevedon town.

Diddy have lost a few players and will be up against it this season in all likeliness.

Not for Torquay though who are 5th in League 2 8)

I might have to go and watch Bracknell when they're at Frome.

[Sound effects : Ceremonial unfurling of Anorak  ]

... already 'got' 2 non-league games in this week 8)

Monday eve saw Milton (nr Didcot) win 5-3 - Andy Alleyne's son (I think) Anthony was MotM scored one and made at least two others.
Wednesday saw a 3-3 draw down in the Western league @ Calne (nr Swinedon)

... so that's 20 goals for me in the first week of the season - shame about the Forest game!

Anyway - some good starts for our 'local' sides in the Hellenic League(s) - which all started midweek for the second season in a row - no-one is quite sure why? :?

Reading Town beat Hook Norton 6-0 - big report in Wednesday's Post
Binfield (now in the same division as Town) won 1-0 at Highworth
Ascot Utd (also promoted) lost 0-2 @ Old Woodstock

The other two promoted sides:
Oxford City Nomads won 2-1 vs Marlow United with goals in the 92nd and 97th minute!
Malmesbury Vics drew 1-1 with Pegasus

Big games amongst the 'fancied' Shortwood bt Witney 1-0 and Almondsbury drew 2-2 @ Wantage.

Other scores from Div One (East):
Henley 0-1 South Kilburn
Newbury 0-4 vs Finchampstead
Kintbury 3-1 Chinnor
Wokkers 5-0 Penn & Tylers

Newcomers Woodley Town did not seem to start their campaign this week - odd cos Eton Wick didn't play either?
Might have something to do with Cricket since neither club has a home game until late August/early Sept - didn't think Eton Wick 'shared' with Cricket though??

Southern Leagues/Isthmian start this Saturday as does the FA Cup - Extra Preliminary Round

Following 'local interest' games in the Cup this w/e:-
(Tonight) : Flackwell Heath v Welwyn GC
(Saturday)
Thame United v Bedford
Chalfont St Peter v Tokyngton Manor
Hartley Wintney v Holmesdale
Camberley Town v East Preston
Cove v Bookham
Binfield v Colliers Wood United
Guildford City v St Francis Rangers
Milton United v Corsham Town
Marlow United v Hallen
Reading Town v Melksham Town

Thames Newport have started the season well. I think this could be thier year.

Certainly my Exiles supporting mate is optimistic - they go to Dorchester tonight- looks as if 'stoke have started well too - lead the table with 3 wins and a draw last night at Worcester - whilst the 'Magpies' host the 'Terras' (Weymouth) this evening .

Two of the new guys look good (Staines & Dover)

League Top scorer with 5 goals in one game (6-2 win at Weymouth) is Stortford's Sheringham - no not the ol' man but his son. (Charlie?)

Too early to say how the local Southern League sides will fare - only started this w/e -
Premier - home win for 'boro; away draw for 'Diddy'
Midland - Beaconsfield, Aylesbury & Marlow lost - draws for Slough, Chesham & Burnham
S-West - 'Royalists' win @ Cinderford - big win for new boys Bedfont Green (who are Windsor's 'lodgers') but losses for 'Robins' Thatcham & Hungerford.

Many other local sides were in the FA Cup - mixed fortunes:

Reading Town 2-0 Melksham
Marlow Utd 1-2 Hallen
Binfield 3-5 Colliers Wood
Camberley 1-2 E.Preston
Wick 4-0 Frimley Green
Hartley Wintney 1-2 Holmesdale
Langford 0-6 Aylesbury (the other 'smaller' one; used to be called Vale - come into lots of money, could soon overhaul their more famous 'neighbours' who actually now have to play in Leighton Buzzard)
Chalfont St Peter 3-2 Tokyngton M.
Thame 1-0 Bedford
Hamble 2-2 Wantage (replay tonight - I was at this - Wantage should have won easily but were garbage at the back)

... and finally teams not involved the FA Cup

Malmesbury 6-1 Ascot Utd
Henley 6-0 Prestwood
Newbury 0-2 Holyport [appears Newbury may have lost a lot of last season's squad and are struggling]
Penn & T 0-4 Finch.
Rayners L 1-3 Eton Wick
Wokkers 3-2 Woodley Town (att. 104) (Woodley's first season in the Hellenic)
Farleigh Rovers 1-3 Eversley ( another new team - gone into the Comb. Counties - can't play at their shiny new ground yet - pending a Safety Certificate)

Maidenhead Utd break their scoring duck (which is more than can be said for some!) but are pegged back by a 90th minute Weymouth goal.

A decent 2nd half, but both teams will be vying for a relegation spot this season.

Not sure about cricket and Woodley Town 1st team TBH. Woodley Town's 1st team play in Charvil now (at the bottom end of Waingels Road), only the reserves play at Woodford Park, where (as you infer) Woodley CC have primacy until the end of August.

Windsor & Eton top after 2 games in the Zamaretto Div 1 South and West League.

Decent game last night, 3-2 win over Andover. Things are looking good. We have a young striker called Michael Chennells who knows where the goal is....

.. Thanks - never played cricket up at Park Farm (Woodley's ground) so didn't know if there were any issues with 'sharing' - I think the 'social' side of the club is in the Wee Waif :P -

- as per my comments above re Eton Wick - they aren't playing at home either for a while, for no obvious reason - BUT I have read they are doing a bit of 'remedial' work at their ground.

Maybe Woodley, Wick and indeed new boys to Combined Counties Eversley, all need to finish off some work before they can use their home grounds.

Doesn't seem to have affected them starting their league campaigns away from home - Woodley won 4-0 @ Chinnor on Tue and Eton Wick thrashed Prestwood 5-1 - think Eversley won away on Sat. too. They can't play at home 'til they get a Safety Certificate.

Anywho .... after a dodgy start looks as if Ascot have picked up - won 4-0 away this week
Reading Town drew 1-1 @ Fairford,
Henley won 4-0 v Diddy Reserves
Wokkers won 2-0 @ Farnborough Reserves (formerly known as Bisley)
Newbury lost again - as did Finch - following their good start (2 x 4-0 wins) surprising 3-0 defeat @ Rayners La.

My personal goal glut continues too 8) saw 8 @ Binfield ## on Monday (4-4 with Nomads) and another 6 @ Sandhurst - though the Fizzers lost 2-4 in the Cup v Erith & Belvedere.

## - still on the thorny subject of ground issues - Binfield should have had a shiny new stand up and available by now but reportedly have run into Planning Issues with everyone's favourite local council!
I overheard a couple of 'fans/officials' saying they were having some minor problems installing the frame of the stand around/between their new floodlights - and had to go back to the Council with amendments to their submission. Hope that doesn't drag on - other sides have been demoted from the Hellenic Premier for not meeting grading rules.

Bracknell are doomed (no players of the standard needed, no money), they will be so far adrift at the bottom of their league (SL SW) by xmas they might as well take up residency in the Hellenic or Combined Counties now and save the hassle and expense of travel for the remainder of the season!
