What is hard to grasp is that he is the ONLY player we have bought - does Rodgers really think then that what we have left is good enough to do a job for this team whilst Mills is getting himself ready?

Royal Lady Some could argue that being prepared to pay up to £2 million for a player who we knew was crocked when we got him, was a sign of desperation.

He's not exactly crocked, is he? Let's remember that Rodgers has had the rug pulled from under him a bit. The logic must have gone "we've got Cisse to cover the first 3/4 matches, then we get Bikey back in while Millsy gets his match sharpness (ish) in the Ressies and League Cup." Then we get exposed against NUFC and Bikey heads off to Burnley, leaving a premature reliance on Mills. Obviously the buck stops at Buck re: the NUFC match, but even so, it's a clean sheet and hopefully Matt's much closer to match fitness to boot so hopefully it'll work out OK over the next few games.

Well the only player apart from Bertrand of course!

I totally agree we still need to add more quality to this squad, and I'll be majorly surprised and disappointed if we don't, but that has nothing to do with how well Mills plays or the drivel you've just been coming out about him being a desperation signing.

What is wrong with you this morning? You're not usually this bad.

Some would argue that calling off a transfer for a player you've been tracking for months on the basis that they have a knock and need a couple of weeks to get fitness when the season's barely started anyway is the thinking of a moron.

Kitson!

direct from JM Kitson was not injured when we bought him, heard by a couple of other nobbers as well, we were aghast to be told that players should not go straight into the team, but make them hungry by leaving them out immediately after they sign, no idea if that was JM's view or SC.

Bertrand is a loan signing. I know that much.

Shame about all the stoopid abuse to RL this morning.

Mills will be fine, worst case is he does really well gets PoS and then fecks off to the Prem at the seasons end.

Indeed he is, and funnily enough he's eligable to play for us for the season because of it!

I think it's more of a shame that she's spouting a load of rubbish. I see no reason not to challenge such guff when it's posted on here, it's just a shame some people won't just hold their hands up and say they were wrong.

Yeah, let's lay off the personal remarks. We can disagree without putting the boot into each other, can't we?

I'm not so sure about that to be honest. I think the reason we spent what we did on Mills was because the club thought it was pretty much a given that Bikey would be gone. He made just as many noises in the last year about leaving as Hunt did.

No I don't think he does. I think his hand are tied a bit with trying to persuade JM to spend by finding the right player at the right price, a policy that frankly over the last few years for whatever reason hasn't worked.

He'll want to add, he'll want to freshen up. He won't make do.

Yeah, fair dues, just trying to give BR the benefit of the (gradually increasing) doubt.

Mills?

I seem to remember the same sort of criticism was leveled at Kitson when he arrived.

Look what happened to him...........

rfc58 People are quick to say SC was partly to blame for not spending the money on offer, and I do see that arguement, but another factor that may be true, he always said he'd never buy a player that was no better than he already had, sensible thinking,

Hmmmmm...are you sure?

Bennett, Sodje, Halls, Brown, Halford, DLC, Duberry, Gunnarsson.

Arguably the likes of Tabb, Hunt, Bikey, Kebe (less so), Matejovsky as they never actually won a place in his team.

Bastard Coppell won't answer my text when I asked him again ! :D

I do remember him saying he'd never add to the squad, or buy a player simply for the sake of it, they needed to be better than what he's already got. From memory, it was asked when commented about the amount of players being offered by agents.

But as you point out, our record of late in purchases leaves a lot to be desired.

It does make sense to think the players we need now, and needed then are most probably in the next bracket up when it comes to cost, and unless we are prepared to pay the going rate, we will rely on finding the "next Kevin Doyle", and I think that's a dangerous policy to have.

I know its easy for me to insist or try and spend JM's dosh, but I see the current policy leaving us closer to Div 1 than the PL.

OK, so we got a draw on this occasion but according to newspaper reports we were outplayed completely.

It don't look promising, that's all I'll say.

papereyes AP

06/07 was Boro, Villa, Wigan, City, Sheffield United, Manchester United

3 wins, 1 draw, 2 losses.

The only disappointment was Wigan away. I was in Wales. We played Sodje.

07/08 was United, Chelsea, Everton [at which point, we looked pretty solid - brave draw, narrow loss, solid win - in a tough start] and then we got horsed, horsed and goosed by Bolton, West Ham and Sunderland.

I think it was the West Ham game that turned me to 'The Dark Side' - we made Etherington look like a Brazilian.

You conveniently forget the run in December of beating Liverpool at home, then not losing for a further three games which saw us in about 12th place going into the New Year,
