We seriously need to f*cking move on and look at other strikers. This is becoming a joke. The way this has been built up as Smith being the answer, I will expecting him to come here and score 50 goals, plus shit gold and p*ss f*cking beer.

Watford don't want to sell for 1.8m - they think they can get more. I'll be laughing my arse off when they lose him for nothing in January.

Please lock this motherf*cking thread down! (Sorry, still f*cking fuming after earlier).

Brenda stated that Watford had turned us down on the £1.8m offer and that he was supprised considering that they had accepted the same figure from Sheffield Utd CHAMPIONSHIP NEWS

Rodgers - understands fans' frustrations.

Reading manager Brendan Rodgers called for patience from Royals supporters following the 3-1 Championship defeat at home to Sheffield United.

Rodgers is still searching for his first league win in charge after seeing Matthew Mills' opener cancelled out by Kevin Blackwell's side.

Stephen Quinn, Jamie Ward and David Cotterill grabbed the goals for the Blades to leave Reading without a home win since January and their fans frustrated at a lack of investment in the team.

The Royals have raised around £12million this summer through the sales of Kevin Doyle, Stephen Hunt and Andre Bikey but have spent less than £2million on Doncaster defender Matthew Mills and the Madejski Stadium was ringing to the chant of "Where's the money gone?" at full-time.

Rodgers said: "I understand the fans' frustrations. They want to see their team winning and have just come to an end of a five-year cycle which brought much success.

"They know we need some players in and we will do that. This is early stages of an exciting project and you saw young players control a game here against a side who will be there or thereabouts this year.

"The situation within the club is that all that money is not available to me but I can't argue against the principles of this club because it has been run very well for 20 years.

"We are going through pain with the young players but it will pay off later on."

Rodgers remains hopeful of signing forward Tommy Smith from his former club Watford before the end of the month but has been left in limbo after the Hornets blocked a move.

Blackwell had a £1.8million bid for Smith accepted earlier in the summer and despite matching that fee Rodgers has so far failed to reach a similar agreement.

He said: "Tommy's situation is that we have offered the exact same deal in every way as Sheffield United but that was turned down.

"We are looking at that but we need to move on to other targets and we are doing that.

"I haven't given up on him but the reality is our offer has been turned down and United's was accepted. That is up to the clubs to decide now."

If this is true then we should tell Watford to Royally f*ck off. I was never convinced that Smith was going to be the panacea that people here seem to think he would be and if we have got other targets then we should be pursuing them more than Smith now.

Russo wants to sell at that price, but not to us if he can help it. If no one else matches that fee, Smith will be a Reading player in the next week or so.

Not if we've secured one or two of our other targets he won't be.

But not if Russo spits his dummy out again. We could probably offer £2.5m and Russo would say no because it is Reading and Brendan Rodgers. Just because he said YES to Blunts it soes not mean he will say YES to us

Let's leave it until the New Year. If Smith REALLY wants to join, he will tell Watford to do one and join us on a free at the start of next season.

So actually he might not be a Reading player in the next week or so after all?

One of your quicker backtracks.

No, Watford need him off the wage bill but Russo clearly doesn't want to sell to us. If he can sell to someone else and for £1.8m, as he previously accepted from Sheffield United, he will. But I'm sure he'll sell to us if we are the only offer on the table, and at the 1.8m wanted. He's just being an arse. It's my opinion if that is the case, and we are the only offer, he will join next week. Watford can't keep him on his wages.

I have to say it's irritating when you post very specific info (like the above) as if it is fact, only to backtrack a few minutes later when another scenario is presented. If it's just your opinion say so at the time.

Still, maybe it's just me...

As if RFC will pay more than a million for a player this summer, RR.

Frankly RFC should just come out officially and say that we are no longer interested in Tommy Smith. He is a good player and we wish him well and wish Jimmy Russo & Watford well for the rest of the season.

In no way should we be crawling to a Hertfordshire pikey who grows lettuce for a living.

Those are the facts and SDR says the deal is offfffffffff and I mean offfffffffffffffff

Malky Mackay was frustrated his Watford side were held 2-2 by the Championship's early-season draw specialists Blackpool on Saturday.
But he reiterated his belief that Tommy Smith is "one of the top three players in the league" after watching him score one and create the other.

Smith is expected to leave Vicarage Road before the close of the transfer window, despite rejecting the opportunity to join Sheffield United after the Hornets accepted a £1.8m offer.

Reading are thought to be his preferred destination, but have still to agree terms with his current club. There has also been speculation linking Newcastle and Portsmouth with a move for the versatile striker.

"The situation is he's a Watford player and, as of tonight, he's still my player," said Mackay.

"I've waxed lyrically about Tommy over the last couple of weeks and I would only add to that, that I think he is a top professional who I think is one of the top three players in the league.

"He's also a good a character, a good character means someone that wants to turn up everyday and give his best and play with his team-mates and give his best in games and right now he's still got a year left on his contract, so there's no reason for him not to go out there and play well."

Blackpool boss Ian Holloway said: "There were times when Smith was an unbelievable threat and if they can hold on to him, good luck to them.

"I can't see them hanging on to him, he's Premiership standard."
