Dirk Gently Can anyone tell me why this is any different to Steven Hunt getting off an aeroplane to Leeds Bradford Airport when on the way to sign for Bradford City, so that he could sign for us instead?

It happens all the time in today's football.

nope, tis the same

and neither watford, pompey, nor smith have done anything wrong

we however do look like idiots, due to rodgers mouth malfunction early on in the saga, russo's understandable but childish bitterness over how we poached their manager/tried to take their player on the cheap, and us taking for ever to sort it out instead of just going straight in with the 1.8 m once sheffield utd had offered it.
(it would never have happened in coppells day)

however, there should still be two players coming in, just not smith
-oh well, he werent that good.

Preston got very miffed by us hijacking their deals for both Butler and Fozzy at very late stages...

These things happen and frankly I get the impression that Watford were stringing this out to try and avoid doing the deal with us. Whether we could have moved it forward any earlier we'll never know. If we'd bid 2 million a month ago they might still have rejected it and kept us hanging on to see what other interest cropped up.

Dirk Gently Still not had an answer on this one :

Essentially it isn't, and I for one have no bone to pick with Pompey. They've done nothing wrong.

The problems for me are:
a) Rodgers stating categorically that Smith wanted to join us prior to pre-season.
b) The transfer saga dragging on so long, with no apparent movement from us until nearly the last minute, which allowed another club to gazzump us.
c) Linked to the above point, the decision to stay with target number one and wait, when we could have switched to an alternate target and got someone in when we clearly clearly need them.
d) Rodgers now stating that nothing is settled, when it seems that all that involves is him getting on his knees and begging/blowing Smith hoping he agrees to join us. Which lets face it he'd be pretty mental to do.

That last point smacks of Madejski - McGhee desperation and refusal to accept reality.

2.8 lita injection I think the problem the fans have is that we could had matched the sheff utd bid 3 weeks ago and probably had signed mr smith, instead of fannying about trying to penny pinch.

But how do we know that Pompey (or another PL club) wouldn't have gazumped us, then?

Pompey didnt have £2 available for transfers a couple of weeks ago, let alone £2m. And as 2.8 li says, we could have gone elsewhere with plenty of time if we had been gazumped.

I'd just love it if Man.City came in with a late bid and gazzumped Pompey.

This is a cold day in hell for us and a lesson that we should have kept players like the fantastic Leroy and Murty and paid for quality like Marcus.

...but no, it'll be ok - they boys will come good. Yeah right! :o

I hope we don't make a panic buy decision and resign Shaun Goater.

What is your purpose Nicky Hammond? – It seems you are being outdone by Fred Dinage.

No difference. The problem was Rodger's implication that Smith would sign for us. Basically saying that he was such a good manager that Smith would sign for no one else. Not Rodger's exact words, but how it comes across. Espicially as Rodgers has done an awful lot of talking and performances on the pitch have been dire, no matter what way you want to spin it.

It's a reactiion to a lot of things that have happened over the last few years, it's a short term knee jerk reaction based on long term unhappiness at the fall othe last two seasons, were we have gone from European contenders (overachievement yes, but we we're that good) to a team that at the moment looks set for the drop.

We needed 4 - 5 players on top of Smith, it's just got even worse.

Got a week to sort it out, no one is directly to blame, but there has to be an answer as to why this didn't happen 6 weeks ago. Saying that we didn't know Hunt was going to leave is just a lie, we all knew he was off, we all knew Rodgers wanted Smith.
