There is a very simple answer to all this.

Easy - just don't vote for a Labour Council. Standing has never been allowed for as long as Reading Borough Council has been governed by Labour Councillors.

Vote Conservative at the next local elections (provided you are a Reading Borough Council registered voter) and lets see the changes sweep through...

Some of the pics of German stadia show clearly how standing can be introduced into seated areas at a minimal risk to safety. Unfortunately, no central government in this country will do anything about it as they regard ALL football supporters as potential axe murderers and rapists. Added to this, who will pay for the conversion? SJM??? I don't think so!!!!!

Depends - you can get 80% extra capacity in a safe-standing area, so in a scenario where a club is selling out then the financial case for converting seats can be made quite easily.

For a new-build or expansion scheme it's even easier - if the law allowed it.

If they ask you for your season ticket, and you refuse, what can they do?
Do you have any recourse if they misuse their powers (whatever they are)?

Well, they certainly can't search you without permission. You wouldn't need to tell them who you are, either, so meake them do the hard work to identify you. As I understand it, unless you adopt a threatening posture, the police will not get involved. So, they can chuck you out, but that's about it.

Legally, the MadStad is like any other private property, so the owners have the right to refuse admission to anyone they choose, with no legal comeback.

So they can ban who they like with no reason and no comeback - Scally at Gillingham banned a guy called Alan Liptrott for several years because of an an argument about who owned an internet domain name....

If you read the terms attached it pretty much rules out anything beyond sitting and clapping, so they already have the upper ground.Plus season tickets still belong to the club.

But if you have paid for a service and the company then refuses to provide that service, and if you haven't broken the terms of agreement (for instance, you have been banned because of a dispute over an internet domain name) then presumably you can sue for your money.

It would be an intersting case, and one I'm sure the FSF would like to take on.

In reality, though, I'm sure something would be worked out long before it got to that - I know that when RFC has wrongly thrown out away fans they've refunded them the admission price afterwards.

That is somewhat out of date, since the FLA (Football Licensing Authority) is clamping down hard on clubs (via local councils) to enforce seating regaulations. So the numebr of clubs able to get away with common-sense approaches is going down all the time and is now less than it was in 2006.

"Fewer" surely?
