Most ecstatic moment as a Reading fan

by M-U-R-T-Y » 07 Sep 2009 14:50

Come on, let's cheer up :D

I see the Promotion vs. thread, but there have been other moments of pure joy as a Reading fan, surely! Moments where you just completely lost your head out of the sheer ecstasy!

My picks would be:

Henderson's last minute winner at Peterborough
Doyle's goal at Leicester
Curo's goal at Brentford (can't find a link  )
Forster's goal at Wolves '03
Taking the lead against Derby on last day of relegation season (bit empty now, but at the time...)

Edit: Can't believe I forgot this!

I so so so so wish that someone would put 'year of the royals' onto Youtube. We played some wonderful stuff that season...

As for my best moments.

Weird ones stick in my head:

Martin Williams equalising at Gillingham with a last minute penalty in 2001. We left the ground feeling esctatic.

Sheffield Weds away last year - finally turning a match around where we were losing. Doyle scoring and everyone going ballistic.

Slaughtering Cardiff 5-1 in the promotion season - we hammered them.

The 1-1 draw which practically confirmed promotion at Stockport in 1994. I couldn't see a thing but what a result!

This.

Was it a Friday game? I remember the crowd being huge and people jumping in over the old programme shop in the corner.

I remember getting treated to Chinese afterwards and being a wreck at school the next day.

I so so so so wish that someone would put 'year of the royals' onto Youtube. We played some wonderful stuff that season...

If you know anyone with a video-->DVD converted, then I'll lend you it tomorrow. I've got 93-94, 94-95 (which stops at the last game of the proper season) and the playoff final itself.

Sheffield Weds away last year - finally turning a match around where we were losing. Doyle scoring and everyone going ballistic.

I really did think we'd seen the turnaround that day. LOL.

Oh yeah, and this.

+ Shane Long scoring against Norwich at the tail end of last season. I was at Uni and freaked out my housemates. If only we'd have won the following Sunday... bah.

As to the Bolton game wasn't it on Good Friday? It was definitely at Easter as I had come back from visiting my mum in the States and I had terrible jetlag - but also great excitement as we won - the crowd was over 14,000.

And as to the tape - hmm we need to find someone to do that. I think I have the video as well but no player.

Oh and am back up in Manc from Wednesday - if you fancy meeting up for a pint soon let me know...

Federici against Cardiff,

Ingimarsson against Ipswich at home in the last minute after Bent had scored,

Harper against 'boro away.

Any victory over Preston. Also the Playoff semi against Wigan was pretty special, certainly up there with Preston NE 0-3 Reading.

For some reason, Sidwell's last minute winner against WBA in 2004, to keep us in with a chance of play offs
And some years before Reading 3-0 Fulham on a Friday night I think, Gilkes scored a pearler and danced to the South Bank, I ruffled his hair, me.

Maguire Getting rid of Harper.

Harper's goal against Liverpool takes some beating - cue absolute pandemonium amongst people who I know have been to most home matches in each of the last 20-30 years. My son's reaction when listening to the radio when Harps scored against Boro away later in the season also has to go down as a great personal moment for me.

There was a point in 2005 - beating, no thrashing, an admittedly weak Brighton team perhaps - that I really began to believe we wouldn't "do a Reading" and cock up the season. It was just a general feeling of all-round fantasticness leading up to Xmas, rather than a specific moment. We had become unplayable and the town had a different vibe about it altogether. I even think many of the glory-hunters put their Man Utd shirts away in shame that holiday.

Steve Stone's miss during the 3-3 draw. Probably disbelief more than anything.

Thanks for reminding me - hearing that Coppell was staying was another great moment. Probably the greatest manager this club will ever have.
