Thaumagurist* Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. How many years ago was that? How many Scottish teams other than Celtic and Rangers have reached a European final in the last 20 years?

In recent years, Middlesbrough has reached one. Chelsea, Arsenal, Man Utd and Liverpool all have been in a final. That's 5, compared to your 2.

Thats not the debate mate, you were laughing at the fact aberdeen are in with a shout. They are a decent size club - have won something in europe and have a big catchment area, they are a bigger club than they get credit for. Bigger than the likes of hull, wigan, birmingham, stoke, etc

Might well see a european super league soon.

A big catchment area? You don't suppose their area is teeming with people? Or will the animals in the highlands turn out to support the local club?

It's not about 'catchment area' or the number of fans you can get in your ground any more in order to generate club income at the top level. To be a big player in the football world, you need to sell merchandise on a global scale to generate enough money to compete with the Man Utds, Liverpools and Real Madrids etc. Celtic and Rangers have that potential, Aberdeen do not.

I still think that Rangers and Celtic would do rather well in the long run (not immediately though)

It's all about being able to attract the top players to your club. Top players like the status of playing for a top club where they are more likely to actually win a top honours. To do that you need a shed load of money to build a squad of 30-40 players on £100k a week. Celtic and Rangers DO have this potential, and if they were playing in the Premiership their status on the world stage would improve and I think it would be good for Scottish football.

It's interesting that the gap in quality between the top flight of England and the Top flight of Scotland has only really emerged since the dawn of Sky Sports Football money (Yes, Scotland has received some money from Sky but no where near the same level as English Football)

This is all hypothetical anyway, but interesting to hear everyone's thoughts nevertheless.

well what would happen if they are put in the premiership, then get themselves relegated? Then possibly even relegated again to league 1? which isn't unthinkable. they would have no champions league money, no sky money and they'd be no bigger force than cardiff are now.

money needs to be invested in scottish football, they can't just jump ship because there is more money down here.

I don't think I have a problem with Scottish teams joining the English league but they have to join the correct tier, can't just throw them in at the top level.

I don't actually hate the Scottish people! I actually like them. I just don't think Rangers and Celtic should come straight into our league.

What's there not to like? Apart from them accepting money from the French in order to attack us.

http://www.express.co.uk/football/view/ ... nd-silence

A FURIOUS row is brewing over how Falkirk and Celtic fans will be asked to show their respects at the Remembrance Day fixture on Sunday November 8.

Angry Bairns fans last night aired their fears on sports websites that a two minute applause rather than silence will be ordered by either the club or SPL officials before the game which will be shown live by ESPN kicks off.

One supporter posted a message saying he was " totally disgusted " at the thought of applauding and warned that such a move would make a farce of the day and would bring " bad publicity" for Scottish football as the match was being screened throughout the country.

While another called himself Bairn4life said " we should not give in to them ( Celtic) as it is supposed to be a time of reflection not joy " Another opposition fan declared : " It would be ridiculous if my club was to change things to suit a minority"

But last night Falkirk's Operations manager Keith Hogg insisted no decison had yet been taken on the issue and that they would be seeking guidance from the SPL .

" We haven't started our planning for the Celtic match yet." he added " In the past we have had applause to commemorate an individual as after the death of former player Paul McGrillen and we've also held a period of silence on other occasions when we felt that was the most appropriate action.

" We will be speaking to the SPL and seeking their guidance over the next couple of days before any decision is taken "

Last night SPL spokesman Greg Mailer revealed the issue would be raised today at a Board Meeting.

" As last year was the 90th anniversary of Armistace Day we teamed up with Poppy Scotland and asked clubs to do something special. But before that we did not dictate what anyone should do allowing individual clubs the choice between silence and applause.

" We have received emails on the matter over the past couple of days however and while it is not on the official agenda for the Board Meeting I'm sure it will be discussed further."

I hope they have a minutes silence as a minutes applause is laughable - we aren't remembering a death in the game. Its rememberance sunday. Celtic putting pressure on falkirk for applause as they know their own fans will boo it and don't want to be heard on national tv on ESPN. I hope they have a minutes silence so the whole world can hear them boo and show them up for the scum they are.

agreed finerain.

They did the same last season as well, think they were at home so "got away with it", every other ground in the UK had a silence, not Celtic though, oh no.

Because they are glad brits died in the world wars - incase youd didn't notice, hardly any Irish fought the evil when Europe called. The amount that signed up was minute - but I don't want to turn this into a pop at Irish thread, just celtic. Only ground in the UK that couldn't honor britains dead. No one knew about last season as setanta broadcast, with this going out to millions on ESPN the celtic club officials are really bricking it, they know their fans are too stupid to actually observe it.

Um, I don't understand this. Aren't Celtic a Scottish team and therefore British and in essence they are booing their own dead.

No denial or defence as usual gus.

Im not the one calling average players world class, no issues here.

Please explain why EVERY team in the UK will be having a minutes silence on remembrance day and celtic are trying to push for a minutes applause?

prolly because it winds people like you right the fuck up:?:

don't let this krazy religious rivalry and booing nonsense mask the fact that scottish teams play horrible football and shouldn't be allowed to play in the champions league.
