The thing is, there probably is but whether they would want to come to Reading/be paid the wages that they wanted is a different matter.

Within our price range perhaps not.

With Rasiak, Hunt, Long and Church contracted for however long it's unlikely we'd be looking to purchase anyone permanently though. That leaves us with the loan market and I'm sure there are plenty out there that are better than what we've got and would relish the thought of some first team football in the Championship.

Marcus Bent was rumoured to be available in the summer, I still think Healy would be too. Simpson and Vokes have gone out on loan from Premiership clubs and I'm sure there are plenty of other realistic options out there. Perhaps even the likes of Welbeck or Macheda at Utd would be up for doing a Frasier Campbell and having a spell on loan.

We are in trouble now, hunt is far better than any of our current strikers.

Why has Mooney never been given a chance? I don't know why SC bought him to be honest - cos he didn't play him, he shipped him out to Norwich and he seemed to do ok there, but when BR came in, he didn't give him a chance either. :|

Because he's mince.

Cork were going down the pan, and we gave them £250,000.

To be honest, he didn't even look like a professional footballer on the occasion I saw him play. And he must have really stank the place up in training to not be getting a chance with our lot at the moment. We might as well sell up and put what little we get for him towards a decent striker.

AP: What on earth for? We didn't owe them anything! They got a cut of his £6million to Wolves didn't they? So much for cutting cloth then.

I don't believe they did. Didn't we settle his sell off clause with Cork last winter?

They say that you learn from your mistakes but this has shades of 'Glen Little' all over it.

Letting the transfer window shut whilst there are fitness concerns over a key player (following the cloth cutting, Noel Hunt was one of the few we had left) and no decent cover available.

Shit happens I'm afraid. For every Little or Hunt there will be players who have been perfectly ok by letting an injury settle down instead of operating needlessly and keeping them out for months. You're just never going to hear about them.

Mostly it works out for the best but every now and again its the wrong call.

He did Ok at Norwich and scored a couple of decent goals against Burton. Unless you've been watching him week in, week out in the reserves or for Norwich last season, I struggle to see how you've come to that opinion without any real basis.

Because two managers, who have watched him day in day out in training and kept up to date with his loan spells, have decided not to play him. How's he doing at Charlton right now?

I've never seen Mooney play so I can't comment on his ability. But seeing as he did ok for Norwich and seeing how bad our current forward line is, I'm surprised he's not been given a few games, at least as a sub. He's got to be better than fcuking Shane Long!!!

2 sub appearances for a total of 15 minutes play. But then Charlton aren't exactly struggling at the moment so don't need him as more than back up to their own strikers.

Just because Coppell didn't rate him enough to play him last season and instead sent him on loan. (remember we didn't need a striker before Xmas, so he was actually gone most of the time we would have needed him iirc). Rodgers has hardly covered himself in glory with his team selections and again, the player is on lona so not available to be picked currently.

Just not a good enough reason to judge him as "mince".

Indeed it will be interesting to see if Madejski how much he pulls his finger out as i think 1 striker in is a bare necessity!!! Need someone prolific bit of pace and trickery to play off the lump Ras

Dont think Simeon can cut it for us, i would go for a prem striker on loan

I've only seen a little of Mooney but I don't think he's good enough I'm afriad.

I certainly don't think he's really the type of player we need either. He lacks a physical presence and we have Rasiak to provide a powderpuff option already.

Hoop Blah It's a shame we didn't get Sam Vokes on loan, he's got a bit of everything and knows where the goal is.

Only thing going against him is he hasn't yet got that experience that we might need now are backs are against the wall.

I have been pushing his case for well over a year and thought that we would have gone for him rather than Rasiak when Doyle went to Wolves as the big target striker that many of us were hoping to see.
Can somebody explain the loan rules especially with people on here talking of us buying players when of course that can't be done until January.
IIRC there used to be a month or so when loan deals couldn't be done ahead of the transfer window opening but others will be better informed than me.
There are plenty of Premiership younger strikers around and the Bents,Healys,Phillips etc and Pardew has recently got his old friend and ours David Connolly who would have been in that mould.

If we are trying to build a side I would prefer us to go for somebody on loan that eventually could be bought rather than get another temporary player like O'Dea and Bertrand who will return to his parent club.
With all of Rodgers,Austin and Lampard's connections in the game I would like to think they have a list ready to work through and hopefully that list would extend beyond Watford and Chelsea where 5 out of our latest 6 signings have come from if you accept that Rasiak was more of a Watford player last season than a Saint and Howard started off at Chelsea.
