Gartside Cunning Plan Thrown Out

by ankeny » 12 Nov 2009 17:22

Gartside attempts to let the Hooligans and the IRA lovers into the English league failed. As we all know it was a plan of his to keep his boring Bolton side in the Prem for all time, a jolly good thing to I say.If this had worked teams like Reading might never ave got in the prem again, unless we were invited.

Excellent news.
I'm very old fashioned but do think that clubs should play in the leagues in their own countries. It would have been totally wrong to allow Celtic and Rangers to try and muscle in to English football.

Anyway...they are still talking about the 2 tier idea for the Prem.....How that would work I don't know.....I do have an idea though.......

Top tier of 20 teams.....lets call it the Premier League.

2nd Tier of 24 Teams .....lets call it the Championship

3rd Tier of 24 Teams .......League One

4th Tier of 24 Teams .......League Two

You're missing the crucial point - the gap between Tiers 2 & 3. Gartside's original plan was no promotion/relegation - he's been persuaded to have 1 up and down, but only with strict ground grading.

And forget about 24 teams per Tier - that's just ridiculous. There'll be no more than 20 in Teris 1 & 2, and probably only 18. Gartside's plan submitted today was for 36 in 2 tiers.

Daft idea...so in reality what is meant to happen is that the big teams (including ones who were big and have just fallen on hard times) get all the money and attention whilst we just give up any hope of getting promoted again etc.

BTW As somebody in the Mail pointed out you'd hardly call Bolton an attractive side in terms of TV revenue and support (which I presume is why people want this American type system to happen) and worthy of being in some speical elite league.

In reality if they are worried about worldwide TV revenue only about 6 teams are actually likely to be that attractive aren't they?

I dont want to see Celtic or Rangers in our league, but i think im one of the few that thinks the league needs to be restructured, and that part of it is a good idea.

The football League have changed very little for 50 years. The Championship is an awful league full of teams ruined by The Prem. 24 teams is too many for 1 division and the play offs are a total anti climax after 46 games. Surely we can come up with a better structure than we currently have?

Tue because teams overspend in the Premiership and then find themselves in real trouble off the pitch but surely we don't want to deny teams the chance to get back in the top flight by having a closed shop league?

You guys were only just in the Premiership 2 seasons ago so just think if suddenly you could never get there again.

There was talk of splitting the lower leagues into regions to save costs I think...

A closed shop was not the proposal. Nor should it be.

Teams overspend because they see the Prem as the be all and end all. Spread the combined income or Prem and Chamionship over 2 leagues and you would have less teams pinning eveything on promotion or staying up. You could take it even further if you want, I just think the current structure is shit.

How about:

Tier 1 20 teams
Tier 2 20 teams
Tier 3 20
Tier 4 south 20 teams
Tier 4 north 20 teams

There are plenty of conference teams well run.

An extended play offs with say 6 teams with a format that favours the highest place finshers. In Rugby League play off semis, the highest finisher gets to chose who they play, and they play at home. Not much else good about the sport, but there are so many ways you could make the league more interesting and better for all.
