The Naughties – RFC

by Compo's Hat » 07 Dec 2009 17:22

From Martin Williams scoring the first penalty of the Millennium at Gillingham to whatever happens at Plymouth at the end of the month, what have been your highlights? Not just the obvious like the promotions and holding the likes of Man U and Chelsea but the more random things when you’ve been following RFC.

Off the top of my head…
Chris Tarrant in the away end at West Ham getting murked for leaving his missus.
Kingsley getting hit on the head when the ball was thrown back at Northampton.
Barry Hunter breaking the CCTV camera at the Manor Ground.
Getting up at half four in the morning for Sunderland and taking my shirt off after Kitson scored being told off by the steward who I replied “what, you going to book me for it” and carried on.
The birth of Compo at Bramall Lane!!!

On the pitch at the Mad Stad, after we became Champions in 2006.
Essien's goal at Stamford Bridge to make it 2-2.
Cureton's goal at Brentford.
James Harper dancing with Ron Grant @ Newcastle, and Lita decking Ron.
Any of the beatings we gave to West Ham in the last ten years.
And goal of the decade, Glen Little's at Home Park?

Own goal from the halfway line at Blundell Park
Andy Steggall being abused at Selhurst Park
Missing our goal in a 3-1 defeat at Wigan whilst doing a conga
Being punched by Santa in Plymouth city centre
Half-time in the concourse at St James's Park
Falling @rse-over-tit whilst celebrating a last minute winner at Middlesbrough
Being thrown out at Ninian Park

Actually I do have some proper highlights, in no particular order:

1) Flying by plane to Plymouth Away (and back again)...
2) Train back from QPR away, having the last laugh against a rather burly Swindon Fan.
3) Millwall away - loosing my voice in the 'away cage' at South Bermondsey station afterwards signing '10 points clear my lord, 10 points clear'.
4) Big-Man driving past Alan Partridge waiting outside Didcot Parkway forgetting he had to pick him up for Wigan away.
5) Norwich away (think same one you must have been at Andy RFC) - getting soaked afterwards in Norwich City Centre on a cold Tuesday evening. But with 3 points in my skyrocket.

Taking the lead at Villa Park first Prem away game
3-1 Liverpool

Curetons 'dipper' vs Burnley
Luke Chadwick signing and scoring on his debut
Inflatables day, all of them

You've really taken on board the opening post there URZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

Anyway:

Changing from singing Butler is a Royal to booing him after he dived at Rotherham
"We're just too good for you" at Ninian Park
"We are unvinceable" at Loftus Road
Caskey running over to Pardew suggesting that he take him off now, after scoring the free kick at home to Bournemouth in 2001
24st Huddlestone headbutting little Bobby Convey

Crutch boy at Brentford
Getting halfway to Bournemouth on three occasions only for it to be postponed each time.
Mark McKeever stealing Jermaine Defoe's thunder at Bournemouth
All the trips to Ashton Gate, ranging from crushing defeats to crushing victories. Never failing to have a gr8 day out, though.
The Sunny Scunny trip.
The train back from Leicester - Policewoman on the platform as the train pulled in - "no football fans in first class, I said no football fans in first class......oh, sod it".

Beating oxf*rd 3-1 at the manor in one of their last ever matches there

Turning up at the JJB on the supporters coaches to be greeted by a sea of orange in the pub just outside their ground

Forster coming on and setting up the equaliser in the 2nd leg of the play off semi - first time i had felt the east stand move

Sitting in a pub at 2.55 drinking beer, when politely reminded by the bar-man that the play-off final was about to kick off and i should probably make my way over to the Millenium Stadium

Going absolutely mental when we went 2-1 up in extra time - i really thought that was the goal that would see us up

Swearing down the phone to mum when the live TV feed from griffin park went AWOL during the 2nd half of the promotion decider - asking her to put the oxf*rd phone next to the oxf*rd speaker and turn the oxf*rd radio on so i could know what the oxf*rd was going on

Being in the town centre after promotion to Div 1

Murt's penalty against QPR

The victory parade - never seen so much blue and white. Singing We are the Champions for about 10 hours solid whilst drinking solidly in the Purple Turtle

Equalising against Man Utd at Old Trafford in the FA Cup with our reserves.

Beating West Ham in a cup game on penalties the day of the Twin Towers Attacks.

Purchasing 4 tickets for that game at Leicester and being delivered 8!

Running down 24 flights of steps after Kevin Doyles Equaliser at Leicester, only to trip and plant my nose firmly in some halfnaked shirt-twirling gingerman's armpit.

Giving it some to Andy Johnson at Selhurst Park after James Harper equalised almost instantly!

Losing 3-0 to Wimbledon at home on Boxing day. :x

The fastest paced game I have ever seen Reading involved in - Reading 3 -2 Crystal Palace - when I started to believe that we were a very good, nay excellent football team.

Forster's late show against Wigan in the Playoffs.

And generally, the fact I got to see the likes of Dave Kitson, Kevin Doyle, Glen Little, Sonko, Ingimarsson and Nicky Forster play for our team.

Doyle's 17 second goal in 05/06 and his 16 second one in 06/07.
The crossbar challenge at West Brom in the FA Cup 06.
11am KO @ the Mad Stad on Boxing Day 2004 against Watford.
Harper screamer against the Blades away 2004.
