This echoes so much of the Bullivant/Burns switch that it's uncanny. First choice is unavailable, go for someone less experienced, they fail, you bring in the 'saviour' first choice.
Difference this time is that it hasn't taken until March.

Ferguson. Reading went in, Posh rebuffed the offer.
I think you're wrong. We approached Peterbrough, requesting to
speak to Ferguson. I don't think we were going to appoint him straightaway, well, at least not before talking to him. Therefore, who knows if he was the first choice?
The Tommy Burns thing, we
did actually speak to him and
offered him the job. Which he turned down, preferring to coach the Newcastle youngsters.
