He's just been on trial at Schalke. They decided not to take him on in the end, but if he can garner serious interest from a team with a good chance of winning the Bundesliga, I think Reading are a little small for him.

Griffin may well prove to be one of the more shrewd signings. I imagine that his determination and strength of character are what we need right now. To complete the back 4, a CB with a bit of pace would not go amiss.

First XIs aren't set in stone, so I was really referring to the midfield "squad". But it depends on the game - I see JT as more Howard-like, so when that type of player is called for rather than a Cisse, he'll be another option for us.

In the Chonicle article McD confirmed it.

Royals caretaker boss Brian McDermott told the Chronicle: "We've signed Andy on loan for the rest of the season.

"He hasn't played much for Stoke City so he's been training to us and he looks good.

"He's a hungry, experienced right-back and he's done well at this level before when he captained Stoke to promotion to the Premier League.

"He's still only 30, he's a good age and it's a good signing for us."
