I know it does not belong in "Team" so feel free to move it mods.
The F.A. have announced that, after an emergency meeting this morning, that they have abandoned the F.A. Cup for the remainder of the 2009/10 season. The statement reads:
"Along with our partners E.on and ITV Sport we have decided that, due to Leeds United A.F.C and Reading F.C.'s lack of respect for our great footballing traditions, we have no choice but to cease forthwith this season's Challenge Cup. We do this with heavy hearts, but have to consider fully the implications of continuing without our beloved Manchester United and Liverpool. The sponsors fear all their custom will disappear, blaming e.on for the demise of the best two teams in the world. The broadcasters, ITV Sport, fear that no one will want to watch a competition that is without the two biggest teams in it.
ITV Sport are developing a viable alternative which we are all excited about. This will guarantee millions of prime time viewers and save the F.A.'s, now tarnished, reputation. The "Mighty Red Cup" will be held on what would have been the dates for any forthcoming F.A. Cup weekends and will consist of Manchester United playing Liverpool on a home and away basis over 6 matches. E.on will sponsor the event and to make it fair there will be a prize of £10M for first AND second place.
We are sure this is the way forward for English football and know it is what the public really want."
The spokesman then went on to say that Lord Mawhinney was being held directly responsible as he had assured the committee that they had heard the last of Leeds United for generations to come. They await his letter of resignation eagerly.
