Compo's Hat Maidenhead beaten 1-0 by Barrow in the Trophy.

Early goal knocked Maiders back in a game which saw plenty of attacking but few clear cut chances. Maidenhead did shake the bar at the death and a draw probably would of been a fair result but the cost of going up there and possibly losing meant it was probably a good thing to save money.

Credit to the 30/35 Barrow fans that came all that way!

... I ended up at this one - agree with the report - thought there wasn't much between the sides - certainly couldn't tell which was from STEP01.
Barrow looked slightly more mobile on the flanks and tighter in midfield.
Though the Magpies threatened on several occasions they were poor at ball retention - thought they had the beating of Barrow in the air but were reluctant to use the longer ball - maybe the surface wasn't the best for that?

Got the general impression that quite a few of the Maidenhead players couldn't really be @rsed - don't s'pose the thought of Gateshead or Chipp'nem in the next was all that exciting?

Got home to find there were goals all over the shop elsewhere - but since my In-Laws turned up late to Babysit  I was somewhat limited in choice.

Other 'local' Scores
FA Trophy
P@xford 1-0 Woking
CONF-South
Basingstoke 2-3 Bromley
SOUTH Prem

Wantage 4-0 Malmesbury
Witney 5-1 Highworth
B&B Trophy Quarter Finals
Sandhurst 2-1 Binfield
Marlow Utd 2-4 (aet) Newport Pagnell Town
This is the 'Cup' that Reading Town won last season - beat NPT in the Final at Abingdon Utd - they have go to Shrivenham at the end of the month (Wed 27th).

Shame we didn't know you were coming, could of easily chatted away to you about all things non league.

Agree Barrow looked more dangerous then they got the ball out wide, particularly in the 1st half out on the left. Maiders crossing was poor last night, too many failing to find a Magpie head.

Basingstoke are in total freefall. They were serious challengers through November and even topped the league and then i dont think they have won since!!

... s'OK - I didn't know myself until about 19:15, as I whizzed up a thankfully free-flowing M4.

I was still in three minds as to whether to bear sharp left at jn 8/9 and head up the 404 to Marlow or even Flackwell - where the 'other' Marlow were playing.

Plumped for York Rd in the end cos I knew - though like the other two this was a Cup match - there was no chance of ET or pens - so I'd get back to the Pub in time for a couple at least.

I'm usually fairly anonymous at NL too - never carry the trappings of the usual 'anorak' i.e. Rucksack, Huge Plastic Bag for Progs, Camera, Flask etc etc - only get noticed if I have my eldest with me and he's wearing his Royals Hat - often gets asked about it - 'specially during our Prem yrs - when plenty of people expressed approval.

...as it turned out I missed a fair few goals @ other games and upon returning to my 'local' - found NOT ONLY were they STILL without my drink of choice ('Guins') but instead of a choice of four/five lagers and about the same bitters - only had Fozzters  or Zoider - my mates had been too bone idle to walk somewhere else like the Upin too. :|

Oh ... and had the Barrow keeper been training with Marcus H? He certainly is from he same school of Goalkicking! :P

Felt that Maidenhead needed a bit more strength up front; young Wall is a decent prospect who will do well for them but the other options - Kieron's St Aimie and Knight - rarely impress me. Was a decent game first half with - as alluded to above - Barrow looking dangerous when they got the ball out wide but with Maidenhead having half-chances at the other end. Second half became increasingly scrappy and the last minute thunderbolt which smashed against the bar for Maidenhead would have been out of place in what was ultimately a rather drab game.

Here's this weeks' NL choices - though I expect quite a few might get rained off by tomorrow PM.

A few down the other side of Sw!nedon have already 'gone under' :-

FA Vase 4th Round - delayed from last Sat: Chertsey Town v Plymouth Parkway - winners @ Home to Whitley Bay in the next round

CONF-South
Chelmsford City v Basingstoke Town
Maidenhead United v Eastleigh
Woking v Dover Athletic
... and elsewhere
Dorchester Town v Staines Town
Hampton and Richmond Borough v Bromley
Newport County v St Albans City

SOUTHERN
Prem:
Didcot Town v Bedford Town
Halesowen Town v Farnborough
One Midland:
Burnham v Soham Town Rangers
One South & West
Bracknell Town v Hungerford Town
North Leigh v Windsor & Eton
Thatcham Town v Abingdon United

Combined Counties
Prem:

Badshot Lea v Epsom & Ewell
Egham v Camberley
Div One:
Eversley v Cobham 14:00 KO
Farnham Town v Chobham
Hartley Wintney v Frimley Green

Hellenic
Prem:

Reading Town v Fairford
Wantage v Carterton
Div One East 14:15 KOs
Eton Wick v Woodley Town
Finchampstead v Farnboro Res.

Challenge Cup:
Holyport v Almondsbury Town
Berks & Bucks Intermediate Cup - probably 13:15 KOs
Newbury v Olney Town
Wokingham & Emmbrook v Padbury United

Wessex One
AFC Aldermaston v United Services Portsmouth
Fleet Spurs v Horndean
Tadley Calleva v AFC Portchester

... weighing up the chances of getting somewhere for most or part of a game after our Cup ex(it)ploits :? at lunchtime - but fairly sure the traffic will kn@cker any attempts to go anywhere - other than perhaps Scours. Doubtless jn11 will be solid so that rules out anywhere to the south.
Even then we'll probably need to sprint bloody miles back to the car...and that's AFTER we've queues for s@ddin' ages to get out of the N.Stand - unless of course we're 0-4 down and the plastics have already gone :(

... think I'd need the use of Sir Les's Chopper to get that far!

By my reckoning the match [12:45 KO?] is due to finish by approx 14:40 at best - allow 20 - 25 mins to get out of the N.Stand (back row :? ) and walk to the car - doubt if I'll be able to park anywhere nearer than Morrison's.

... mean's we'll be on the road again 15:00h earliest - which I think rules out all BUT Scours if we want to see most of a game?

... doesn't help that my Lad wants to be dropped off back at home - which is sort of on the way.

PS Wouldn't be surprised if Scours is P'Poned anyway with all this wet stuff about.

I remember not so long ago Whitley Bay dumping Preston out of the FA Cup. Whitley Bay must have hit on hard times to find themselves in the Vase.

... indeed - was season 89/90 - beat Preston in the 2nd Round proper - lost 1-0 @ Rochdale in the next round.

Dropped out of the Northern Premier League structure after 99/00 and down into the plain ol' Northern League.
Being down at STEP05, they've entered the Vase since 00-01 season and won it twice : 01/02 & last season.

Bearing in mind the NL Pyramid was more or less formed back then they've not been above what is now STEP03 - so not exactly reaching the heights - they spent only 4 season in the Unibond Northern Premier - Premier (really that does seem to be what it is called now - I don't have a stutter! ) from 91 - 95.

And any smugness we felt at the speed of our getaway from South Reading to arrive at York Road by 3:13 was immediately wiped away by being informed of an early 0-2 scoreline and by the time we took our place on the terrace a third goal flew in for visitors Eastleigh  . Game over after less than 20 minutes and it ended 0-3!

Well I soon gave up considering a 2nd game - like I said circumstance dictated I had to park in Morrisons - (involving dropping youngest off at Granny's house - Caversham, then to game via Reading Central Pool - middle one had Diving  ) - so couldn't consider a more 'creative' getaway point.
AND the eldest didn't want to come to a 2nd game anyway - he'd been to most on offer in range.

Back to Car about 15:10 - complete gridlock - between A33 and ol' Basingstoke Rd - so gave up.

Think my 'Exiles' mate might be going there now, since they lost in the Trophy replay A vs York.

W&E 1 - 0 AFC Hayes

Phew, bit of a struggle to get one in the back of the net today, thanks mainly to a terrific display by the Hayes 'keeper. Had a good chat with us fans behind the goal as well, so top marks to him. We also had 3 shots cleared off the line.

Totton's game was postponed today so we are now 14 points in front; Totton now have 4 games to catch up and are in the semi-final of their Cup so are going to be really up against it for the rest of the season.
