surrounded by saints
Sarah Star Can't someone just teach our strikers to score?

Or is that a silly question?

or.... sell somebody, and do what saints have and sign someone who knows how to get the ball between the posts!! £175 for barnard was a bargain risk worth taking in my opinion.maybe we should have got pards back :) :)

Doesn't there come a point when you start wondering why your strikers can't do it and start trying to fix them rather than just chucking them out and getting new ones? Seems a bit wasteful (especially if money is tight)when they create enough chances and get close but can't even score a penalty. They've scored before, what's gone wrong?

Alan Partridge Again not trying to be too provactive about this w_r but people said that about going down to the CHampionship. How many relegations does it take for the building work to start?

The thing Reading could do about it is sign a striker with some proven track record behind him, a Healy, Forest have a million strikers nick one of theirs. If Reading go with their current crop of 'strikers' then it's going to be a long 20 games.

Hmm. League 1 is (IMO) a better place for us to rebuild, mainly because we have 5 or 6 youngsters who have proven they can do the business in that league. Church, Sig, Karacan, Pearce, Davies, HRK, Henry, Antonio, McCarthy, Andersen etc have all shown they are quality players at that level, and with the right manager, we could well get a team going that will win L1, and put us in a good position for a real crack at the Championship. That will be the positive spin I'll be putting on relegation anyway.

Respectfully disagree. Relegation would be a disaster wrapped in a tragedy topped off with a catastrophe.

I can't even bear thinking about how shit that division is.

That's the point I'm making. Southampton were going nowhere in this division, got relegated, winning for fun, and when they get back up they'll be around the play-offs for sure. Norwich likewise. Leicester similarly. We have the academy, facilities, and fanbase to get back up reasonably quickly, with some much needed momentum in our sails.

However, obviously, relegation is certainly not what this club needs at the mo.

True, though lose at home on saturday and i would tend to think we are 'finished'. The likes of Ispwich,Sheff Wed,Barnsley and even Plymouth have all pulled themselves out of a deseperate situation where as thus far Reading and Peterborough dont appear able to string good results together to give us that chance. We are now relying on the likes of Scunny,Derby and Palace to dip horrendous in form and hope our points haul is enough. One home win all season and one of the worst defensive records is indicative of this season, it almost feels like we should just wipe the blackboard clean and start all over again.

I think we are already in the rebuilding phase and the last few league games may well be the nadir.

In the previous slump, I never believed TB1 would keep us up or TB2 get us up. We had no promising youngsters and were clearly heading in the wrong direction.

This time, we clearly have some good players who also look motivated. We've done the last of our transfer dealings (presumably) and should benefit as Griffin and possibly, Kinishvilli (obvious sp) settle in.

You can see that we can improve and could be capable of getting out of trouble.

Saturday is a massive game to my theory.

Again whilst I sort of agree, it doesn't answer the biggest problem Reading have had in the last 12months, scoring goals. The current strikers here are not good enough to keep Reading in this league. They have to do some business in this area of the park to even stand a chance. It's more important than who the manager is to be perfectly honest.

Considering the amount of reactionary drivel you posted about Rodgers last season, and your no-progress thread before that (which I agreed with a lot of by the way) isn't that just a little hypocritcal Schards?

Last night, and the Forest match, were difficult games, but it's more the steady decline and gradual realisation by many of the situation we're facing that is causing the posts you're moaning about.

I think we probably have ten games left that we have a decent chance of winning

Not a big fan of this mentality to be honest. We could beat anybody in this league and whilst some fixtures are obviously harder than others, you have to go into every one looking to win.

Not many foresaw a win away at Preston, for example.

Totally agree, and apart from a few games I think we have a chance of winning any game in this league. However, we have a far greater chance of winning at home to Barnsley this weekend than we do winning at Cardiff in April.

I think we have to go into every game thinking we can win it, and doing everything we can to pick up 3 points, but realistically there are times when you have to pick you battles a bit, and games that if we don't win we're letting good chances pass us by.

Agree with both of you about every game needing to be treated the same and we cannot pick and choose.
If you are playing one of the top sides they may have an off-day and be there for the taking whereas one of the lower clubs could be fighting for their lives and on the day play above themselves.
Managers and pundits often say that everybody can beat everybody in this division and that is why games against teams around us are really no more important than against the top sides.

The Premiership is a different ball game altogether and there are mini-leagues within a league so games against teams around you are more important by virtue of a win denying a "competitor" 3 points but in this division the gaps are nowhere near so big and the argument doesn't wash ,e.g Peterboro beating us hasn't done much for them as they have hardly beaten anybody else.

Also I thought we had put to bed the question of luck but posters keep on bringing it up.
Last night we got a penalty away from home (something that people say seldom happens but look also at the Liverpool game)but the point is we didn't take advantage of that opportunity to go 1-1.
It wasn't bad luck that caused Gylfi to miss,it was bad finishing and that is the common theme of our season.

Our strikers this season look no better than Div 1 standard and we are heading that way unless the new Icelander is a reincarnated Jamie Cureton.
It's a lot to ask of a newcomer to English football and our record with others coming to us from abroad like Fae,Cisse,Marek and Kebe isn't great.

The least we should expect for the rest of the season is 100% effort and 100% concentration and then we keep everything crossed.

A lot now is going to depend on how the players and fans react as the league table now looks grim and could well look worse at 10PM.

We do need to remember though that the three sides we have played twice now are all top 6 and were all on decent runs so confident.

We probably need 7 wins and 6 draws to stay up and looking at the remaining games the only ones I would write off are Newcastle, West Brom at home and Cardiff possibly Middlesboro away.

The remaining home games look largely winnable and we have to remember that we have only had one home league game with McD in charge so Sat could be the pivotal game.

A good win could really get us moving. We all really need to get behind the team on Sat

I wasn't aware Rodgers was anything to do with us last season.

As for my no progress thread, just telling it as I saw it, which proved to be entirely accurate, I just saw the writing on the wall before most others.

Bleating about where we are now and demanding action is now is daft IMHO, we are where we are because of what happened months and months ago, not because of what's happened in the last few weeks. I believe we've bottomed out and bleating now won't solve or help anything.

Nice idea but you and our chairman forget that we have one of the worst home records in the country so not only do we have to beat the opposition but also put the terrible record behind us.
Also we may play some more games against teams coming into form and I think you can add Ipswich,Blackpool,Doncaster and Leicester to the difficult away games list.
We are in a very difficult position.

Hoop Blah Going over old ground a bit, but that was kind of the situation that Rodgers was left with when he took over. He tried to address some of them, with limited success of course, and with his hands tied to a certain extent.

I respect your point on this, but I fail to comprehend how a manager who ultimately spent circa £3 million on players (including a reported £2 million on one player) can be accused of having his hands tied. He had £3 million to address the problems everybody saw, and didn't do so sufficiently. That is Rodgers' fault.
