February - masssive month

by Stuffed Crust Pizza » 04 Feb 2010 11:55

With the fixtures coming thick and fast this month, February's form is going to be key to our survival effort. Out of the five league matches this month I think we are more than capable of gaining at least ten points with wins against Plymouth, Palace and Wednesday and nicking a draw at Doncaster. I feel an FA Cup exit although dissapointing will allow MaccyD's men to concentrate on their league form.

Has there ever been a more important month in the history of RFC? One thing for sure its going to be a rollercoaster ride!

My predictions:
Sat 6th Feb A v Doncaster DRAW
Tues 9th Feb H v Plymouth WIN
Sat 13th Feb H v West Brom (FA Cup) LOSE
Weds 17th Feb A v Crystal Palace WIN
Sat 20th Feb A v Blackpool LOSE
Tues 23rd Feb H v Newcastle LOSE
Sat 27th Feb H v Sheff Weds WIN

Im hoping we can turn the Mad Stad into a bit of a fortress for the run. After the nonsense we've had to put with in 2009 surely we deserve it!

Difficult to argue why February is more important than any other month TBH.

Stuffed Crust Pizza Has there ever been a more important month in the history of RFC?

For starters, I'd argue winning promotion to the premier league was more momentous than a championship relegation dogfight. But to answer your question, yes. In fact there are loads more.

You've missed Newcastle (H) off that fixture list - 23rd Feb unless WBA finishes as a draw.

Feb is massive - said a long time ago that if we are bottom 3 come March 1st then we will go down.

4 very winnable league games in the month + two rather less so... given our current position that makes the month absolutely massive.

August and September were more important IMO, but we arsed them up.

Agreed - although I would put the date back to March 10 - don't forget we've got Scunnay (a) and then Derby (h) before then. Still in the bottom 3 after Derby = nailed on relegation IMO.

Yes but it's the performances and results over the whole season that will have led to that - not just February. Or am I missing something? Is there some kind of "win 2 matches get one point free" promotion running this month?

it's not a massive month - it only has 28 days.

No the point is - that February has a run of fixtures which a team that expects to stay in this division (from our current plight) should pick up enough points to move them out of the bottom 3 - not to any real comfort but it will get some momentum going that should see us right. Especially as we play teams in amongst us.

However, fail to do well this month and the job becomes much more difficult, almost too difficult. So whilst your right it's the whole season that will see us survive or fail - Feb is a mircocosm of that and as such will have a big baring on our final position.

Suddenly ?

Our last 6 games have seen 3 wins, 2 defeats and a draw and against much better opposition.....

Agree, it's about the context of our current position in the season. Had things happened differently in a previous month, February could well be irrelevant.

The mountain we have to climb from here is pretty big. Do well and it's big hill. Do badly and it's Everest.

Have now edited original post to include the Newcastle game and have gone for a predictable away win.

Disagree. Whatever happens in Feb, March and April will be equally as important, as were December and January.

What you seem to be arguing is that as the number of games remaining decreases, the pressure on us to turn the corner increases. Whilst I broadly agree with that sentiment I'd like to remind everyone that it's your results over a whole season that cause relegation, not the last 3 months.
