Re: Reading FC on U.S. TV: WBA Cup Replay (A) --sorry, folks...

by RoyalChicagoFC » 23 Feb 2010 16:07

In brief: Wednesday's cup replay won't be on TV in the States, and Daylight Saving Time is about to return and screw up stateside Royals' circadian rhythm for a few weeks; read on for the complete lowdown

Right folks --for the fact that none of the Wednesday's FA Cup Fifth Round Replays will screen in the States we can blame UEFA for putting the Champions League Round of 16 on a staggered schedule and the fact the FSC has Champions League screening rights now --otherwise, it's a decent bet that our replay away to West Bromwich Albion this Wednesday at 2:45 PM Eastern would've screened on FSC or Setanta US, and most likely on delay

Such will not be the case, so seek alternative portals for viewing the match live

Also, given that the US and UK/EU are on a different schedule for making the switch over to Daylight Saving Time/Summer Time, it's the occasion once again to become aware of the looming disruption of normal time conversions and what it means for viewers in the States (and as a practical matter, getting it wrong on U.S. soil would mean showing up an hour early for the HNA? matchday chat/match thread/RW stream/live text commentary scroll, etc. --so no lasting harm done)

In any event, here's how things look for the period of time in question and with eyes upon the fixture list as it currently stands:

SAT 13 MAR 10:00 AM U.S. Eastern Standard Time --Reading v. Bristol City (normal time conversions apply)
SUN 14 MAR 2:00 AM Daylight Saving Time takes effect; clocks move forward by one hour in all U.S. time zones (where applicable)
TUE 16 MAR 3:45 PM Eastern Daylight Time --Reading v. Queen's Park Rangers
SAT 20 MAR 11:00 AM EDT --Middlesbrough v. Reading
WED 24 MAR 3:45 PM EDT --Leicester v. Reading
SAT 27 MAR 11:00 AM EDT --Reading v. West Bromwich Albion (league match)
SAT 27 MAR 9:00 PM EDT British/European Summer Time takes effect; clocks move forward by one hour in UK/EU, and normal time conversions between US and UK/EU are restored
SAT 3 APR 10:00 AM EDT --Ipswich Town v. Reading (normal time conversions resumed)

And so forth; of course, any fixtures rearranged so to be played during the window between Sunday 14th March and Saturday 27th March will be affected by the temporary change of regular time conversions, so do be advised

No more of RFC's league matches for this season are scheduled for screening on UK TV, and it is not expected that any will be rearranged for the purpose between now and the end, which would mean that we won't be seeing our guys in league play on U.S. TV again before August

FSC will have quarterfinal matches from the FA Cup on the weekend of 6th/7th March, and ours would kick off at 8:15 AM Eastern U.S. time on the Sunday if we should earn our way in; know hope

Regarding latest news for Fox Soccer Plus. I found this link on a Fulham fan's site:

http://fulhamexiles.wordpress.com/2010/02/21/fsc/

Probably not a surprise that the existing $15 fee Setanta charges is still there which is unfortunate since there is likely to be no increase in CCC match coverage and I never felt the coverage to warrant an additional $15 given FSC, ESPN, and GOLTV are all covered under my sports package fee of $12. Oh well.

Yea! Now for the decision. Listen live and with folks on hobnob or wait and watch it later. Or both. hmmmm. At least it's nice to have the option.

One of my best mates (another Yank) is a Villa fan, so we will both avoid Facebook and portals like Hob Nob and watch it live together. I will miss the chat, but it will make it fun watching with him.

Re: Reading FC on U.S. TV: Villa (H) FAC6R SDD on FSC (5 PM EST)

by RoyalChicagoFC » 01 Mar 2010 23:44

You'll only have to wait until 2 in the afternoon your time as it stands, 'Hawkerz, which ain't so bad I guess (and it's got to beat hell out of getting up for a live kickoff at a quarter of six in the morning --although I've done it, and on the coldest day of the winter no less [and it happened to be my frigging birthday to boot], but then enough about me)

So anyway, yeah --I've sort of been hanging fire on this (even though FSC "announced" it a few days ago), so first to what we know, and then with the speculation and backwash (and do watch this space for any updates to the schedule as they may arise)

The basic facts:
--The premiere screening in the States of Villa at home in the Sixth Round of the FA Cup is set for a same-day delay to go from 5:00 PM Eastern U.S. time on Sunday 7th March

--The actual time of kickoff is 1:45 PM GMT on Sunday at the Madejski Stadium, which is 8:45 AM Eastern U.S. time (and 5:45 in the morning on the West Coast), so that means that the full time whistle'll've gone a good six hours before the match screens here for the first time (All together now: "Bogus!")

--It is currently scheduled for just one repeat screening, from 3:00 AM on Tuesday the 9th on FSC, but additional repeat screenings at better times of day may be added (and the new FSC+ channel that has come into being within the last 24 hours may be scrambling for filler programming of the kind; see note w/link below)

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm looking for available online streams; I'm not aware of any pay-per-view/pay-at-the-pub options, either, so it looks like this is the boat we're all in

Setanta US ceased to exist last nite, by the way, and is being absorbed by Fox, which has added a second football channel and called it FSC+

I don't know what the terms are for getting access to it --whether or not it's part of a standard "sports tier" to various and sundry cable/satellite platforms, and at this point I'm not much inclined to care; FSC haven't even got round to posting listings for their new channel, at least from what I can see

PremAddict, you and perhaps others may find this discussion of the matter from BigSoccer [sic] useful

Also, please be advised that we move our clocks forward by an hour overnite on 13th/14th March, but they don't do it over across for another couple of weeks after that; it'll directly affect when we need to be in our places with bright, shining faces for kickoffs, and I'll update this thread so to keep it all str8 for my m8s, yo

So that's where we are, and I'll update as we learn more; carry on

Cannot possibly wait that long after the result to watch it 'live'. The suspense would drive me to despair. I will be up early and find one of the numerous feeds on the interweb to watch it.

...and Arky knows that he's always more'n welcome to glue his eyes to the laptop round mine at the appointed hour (and to stick around for the delayed screening if he wouldn't mind lunch and dinner getting ordered in) --but if I had to put money on it, I'd say he'd be most comfortable rolling out of his own bed on Sunday morning and staying put

No changes to the TV sked, folks; once again, in a nut's hell...

Sunday 7 March 8:45 AM Eastern U.S. time (0545 USPDT/1345 GMT): Reading v. Aston Villa kicks off --seek streams, etc
Sunday 7 March 5:00 PM EST (2:00 PM PST): First-time delayed screening of RFC v. AVFC on Fox Soccer Channel
Tuesday 9 March 3:00 AM EST (midnite PST): First and only scheduled repeat screening of RFC v. AVFC on Fox Soccer Channel

I assume it doesn't help at all but the game is on Setanta Canada realtime (8.45 kick off eastern). Not sure if you are able to get the feed anywhere in America as I know we can get the American sports channels at some of the bars here.

Absolutely got that prognosis spot on Chic! I am hoping to be able to watch the delayed transmission wallowing in the glory of an earlier victory and booking a flight back to Blighty for the Wembley semi.

Yeah, 'fraid that's about the size of it, given it's a satellite channel and not free-to-air...such as in the case of the signal of a local Toronto or Hamilton station bleeding over into household receivers in Buffalo (right?) and vice versa

Cheerz for the headsup though Dazed m8 --our Royal neighbo(u)rs to the north'll be pleased to know, [mode=obligatory] eh [/mode]

Eyes on the match thread here and on the matchday chat available thru the Interactive Index on the main page as the appointed hour approaches would be my advice, O1TM --and mind the time conversion!

Just a round-the-globe reminder then...

In the States:
Sunday 7 March 8:45 AM Eastern U.S. time (0545 USPDT/1345 GMT): Reading v. Aston Villa kicks off --seek streams, etc

In Canada: Live on Setanta Canada from 8:45 AM in the east, etc

In Oz: Live on Setanta Australia from 12:45 AM Monday
