Reading Fixture on date of birth

by Berry » 03 Mar 2010 19:44

I was 40 on Sunday and amongst pressies lavished on me, my mum got me a cracking present which was the Reading programme of the day I was born, luckily I was born on a Saturday , anyway the programme is for the 28th Feb 1970 Home to Rochdale and we were top of the table, although we had played 2 more games than 2nd place.
Fantastic present to recieve, even a little press cutting inside saying we won 1-0.

Well, having a birthday in the middle of the cricket season rules me out

Now, I wonder if Ark Royal will contribute to this thread? He famously said in 1996 that Reading never lose on his birthday. Apart from getting totally vvankered with him the night before, and me jumping out of a moving car, the game was a complete disaster. Reading 1 Palace 6

What a pcunt!

Bristol Rovers 1 Reading 0.

Avoided relegation that season on goal average over Bradford Park Avenue.

Happy birthday (retrospectively)!

Without wanting to give my age away, because ladies don't age we just... umm, something or other,... we appear to have beaten Oldham 3-1 the day I was born.

In later years, we have beaten Doncaster 3-0, drawn against Oxford U and Maidstone in the FA cup (separate games, obviously), drawn against Portsmouth, and thrashed Brighton 5-1... so we never lose on my birthday!

Nearest game to my birthday, a 1-1 draw at home to Rochdale, May 1st 1971, second last game of the season. We got relegated to the 4th Division for the first time at Villa Park a week later. They finished 4th that season behind amongst others, Halifax.

Unbelieveable to think Villa were European champions a mere eleven years later. Would be a bit like Charlton winning the Champions League in 2021.

The whole thread is a cunning advertisement for Alan Sedunary's RFC bible: "Heaven on Earth"
More recent seasons are available from the main HNA page

Soccerbase.

The 73/74 season finished the week before I was born so the closest match was a 0-0 draw away to Chester in Division 4. We finished 6th that season missing out on promotion by two places and 8 points.

Closest for me is 2 days after. On Saturday April 11th 1964 we beat Bournemouth 2-0 at Elm Park.

Not bad I suppose but better if it'd had been Swindon.....

Good thread by the way.

The second of three 3-1 defeats in a row in 1980/1981 season. Bucks Fizz won Eurovision that night.

Well my birthdays during the off-season. I occasionally get a Didcot friendly near it if lucky.
