Negative_Jeff McDermott has come up with two successful ways of playing, something Coppell never acheived. The Bristol City scouts must have seen us the last couple of games play impressively in 4-4-2 so we switch seamlessly to 4-2-3-1. Even then we have further options, Church or Long chase balls down the sides whereas Rasiak can hold the ball chipped into him.
I could be churlish and say I am uneasy about McDermott`s insistence on only playing in the other team`s half, but in our position winning has justified the means. In fact our so far impressive new manager has made the thread title redundant.

i could have sworn we went to places like old trafford, and stamford bridge and came away with points after playing one up front........

0-0 at Old Trafford, nine men behind the ball and we were lucky. Set the tone for the rest of the season, ending up relegated.

I'm with Negative Jeff on this. When Coppell tried something different, it was a more desperate attempt. Games such as Arsenal, Chelsea and Man Utd away prove this to an extent, it was simply a massive effort to put 9 behind the ball. The only other times he has changed things was in games such as Burnley in the play-offs, because our 4-4-2 had been so poor.

McDermott's alternative formations appear to be more thought through and picked so that we can go and win the game, and stop the opposition entirely. Maybe Rodgers has paved the way for this with his attempts earlier in the season.

A bit worth making though it that we've also now got the squad to play these different formations; having McA and Kebe on the wings lets us play 4-3-3, as the two wingers are very attacking wingers. Also, with Rasiak we've finally got a holding forward we missed last season with Kitson leaving. And then in the middle, we seem to have finally found the Sidwell replacement of a tough tackling CM who can also go forward in Jay Tabb.

Interesting that after re-asserting the basics and returning to 4-4-2, McDermott seems to have gone on and made Rodger's 4-2-3-1 formation actually work, where it had been hopelessly useless under the man with the Plan.

There seems to be a core plan, that with a few subtle changes in formation and personel can be very flexible.

My fav would be the 4-2-3-1

---------------------Feds--------------------------
----Griffin----Ivar------Mills----Bertran-----
---------------Tabb-----Karacan--------------
----------McAnuff---Sig---Kebe------------
--------------------Long-----------------------

Subs:
Hamer
Pearce
Matejovsky
Davies
Howard
Church
Rasiak

Karacan over Bryn, still think Bryn can't play every 3-4 days every week.
