Shane, make sure to mention the crazy yank fan who has made up a couple of good chants for you on Hob Nob:

Shane Long is Magic
He wears a magic hat
And when he puts it in the net
He says, 'Who called me fat?'

And to the (Woah-o, woah-o), song)

Shane Long
Shane Long
Shane Long-Shane Long-Shane Long
They all slagged you off on the hob nob
But the critics were all wrong, SHANE LONG!

SpaceCruiser
Deadlock Napoleon decreed that there should be a full investigation into Snowball's activities. With his dogs in attendance he set out and made a careful tour of inspection of the farm buildings, the other animals following at a respectful distance. At every few steps Napoleon stopped and snuffed the ground for traces of Snowball's footsteps, which, he said, he could detect by the smell. He snuffed in every corner, in the barn, in the cow-shed, in the henhouses, in the vegetable garden, and found traces of Snowball almost everywhere. He would put his snout to the ground, give several deep sniffs, and exclaim in a terrible voice, "Snowball! He has been here! I can smell him distinctly!" and at the word "Snowball" all the dogs let out blood-curdling growls and showed their side teeth.

Is that from Animal Farm?!?

PlasticRoyale Whilst it's all very well that his on field form has improved i'm slightly concerned about Shane's mathematical ability if he can be swayed by amateurish statistical analysis

Dear Shane,

I think you're great and a role model to all us fatties, just a small favour though, would you please stop scoring for at least the next 36 hours.

Lots of love

which nobber was it that said Long was poor, and would never make a footballer, was a while ago now, but it stuck in the mind, not seen him come back and say well done to Long, though of course I may well have missed any priase, , and would expect the person in question to eat humble pie.

I already did, I emailed the sports editor of the newspaper the "article" asking him if they did indeed publish that, and more specifically the HNA related bits. I expect a response tomorrow.

To be fair to his knockers... He was pretty shit apart from early March 09 - late April 2009 and January 2010 - now.

We can write off the period between as down to a combination of Rodgers, injury, team form and weight. He looks a different quality of player now. That doesn't necessarily make people who said he was rubbish wrong.

He's come on more than I could imagine, but he's not exactly proven himself fully yet. He's had a period of good form and a period of excellent form. Both pretty short. And he still hasn't proved he can get 15+ over the course of a season....

I can't help thinking what a player he could have been for us these last couple of years with plenty of first team experience down the league whilst we were in the Prem.

How often did Doyle have long barren periods? He got to 18 goals and then was barren for months.

In 2007-8 Doyle scored 6 goals total in 34+2 appearances.

Long needed a run in the team and didn't get it.

Here is typical last season

14 Watford
00 Swansea
10 Wolves
00 QPR
14 Preston
00 Bristol
00 Forest

BUT THEN...

13 Wednesday Scored the winner and headed off the line in defense
90 Plymouth
90 Charlton 2 Goals
68 Ipswich
01 Doncaster (effectively, did not play)
26 Palace
90 Coventry
00 Sheff Utd (DNP)
90 Blackpool
41 Barnsley
90 Derby 1 Goals
90 Norwich 2 Goals
90 Birmingham

779 Minutes SIX STARTS, FIVE GOALS
8.66 Games = 6 goals

He has only ever had two reasonable runs in the team
the last third of the season last year when he scored 6 goals,
the rest of the team combined managed 8.

and this recent spell where he has been brilliant.

No, not yet a full season but

He has scored 18 goals in his last 25 Starts. On exact minutes he's played less than 31 full 90-minutes.

He is averaging a goal every 1.70 games. For comparison Doyle last season was a goal every 2.19 games

11 26 15.33 09 01.70 0153
14 08 14.33 09 01.59 0143

25 34 30.67 18 01.70 0148

Well done for answering your own point in the first line and then adding a load of superfluous junk to pad it out. Doyle proved he could do it over a season. In three of his 4 seasons with us iirc.

Long didn't get an extended run until the end of last season because he wasn't playing well enough to justify one. Compare to Doyle who after 2 starts and 3 substitute appearances went on to score 1 in each of the next 3. And IMO offered something to the team even when not scoring. Something Long is also doing at the moment IMO.

With every passing minute, btw, my suspicion that the original "article" is all just a spot of comedy writing grows

And not a half bad effort, I don't mind saying
